10 TIPS TO BECOMING A SPACE BLASTER MASTER

So, you’ve been playing Super Mega Blaster Special Turbo, blasting through asteroids like a maniac but still don’t know what it takes to beat the boss… You’ve got loads of credits to spend but don’t know which weapon to upgrade or space blaster to unlock. You’ve done loads of the challenges but there is one that is just too difficult… What you need is 10 tips to becoming a space blaster master.

Fear not! With the retro inspired space blaster being over a month old on PS4, Switch, & PC and finally out on Xbox One it’s time to let you in on a few secrets to space blaster mastery.

Tip #1 – GET A BETTER SHIP WITH A TURRET

That sounds pretty simple, but so many players complain about the difficulty whilst still piloting the very first space blaster ‘Nibula’. To top this off they usually have loads of credits and for some reason haven’t bought a better ship. As soon as you fire-up the game for the first time your aim should be to save some credits and unlock a better space blaster with a turret. ‘Cherub’ is a great choice, it’s only 15 credits, starts with a shield, and has a twin cannon turret. ‘Lunavi’ and ‘Weevil’ are also good choices early on. Once you’ve unlocked a ship with a turret the game becomes a twin-stick shooter and you can aim with the right stick.

Tip #2 – SAVE 100 CREDITS (TROPHY/ACHIEVEMENT HUNTERS ONLY)

This tip doesn’t apply to players on Nintendo Switch or players who do not care about trophies or achievements. If you are a trophy or achievement hunter, however, you are going to want to save 100 credits as soon as you’ve purchased your first space blaster with a turret. This will unlock the ‘Piggybank’ trophy/achievement. Doing it early on gets it out of the way and then you can spend that 100 credits in the shop on useful upgrades to give your score a boost.

Tip #3 – DO THE CHALLENGES

Don’t forget to complete challenges, turbo challenges, and space missions to get extra credits. You can get credits by blowing stuff up, but you can get tonnes more by completing challenges. Credits are needed to buy upgrades and perks in the shop as well as for unlocking space blasters. Without these ships and upgrades the game is much more difficult to play. Also, in the PS4, Xbox One, and Steam versions all of the challenges need completing to get all of the trophies/achievements. You can view your current challenge and turbo challenge on the loading screen or pause screen, and can view space missions in the progress menu.

Tip #4 – GET A WARP ENGINE

If you are finding the lethal screen edges a pain, there is a way to remove them. Simply save up 50 credits and purchase the ‘warp-engine’ from the shop. This will remove the lethal edges from ‘survival mode’ and protect mother mode’ allowing you to warp from screen-edge to screen edge a la Pac man.

Tip #5 – DON’T FORGET YOUR BIG-BOMBS

Big-bombs are really useful when you get into a jam. Press the bomb button and “boom” the whole screen is cleared of enemies and projectiles. Ships can carry from 1 to 3 big-bombs, when you’re carrying a full load make sure to drop one before picking another up.

Tip #6 – UPGRADE THOSE POWER-UPS

Upgrading weapon power-ups in the shop is key to improving your survival chances against the waves of alien forces. If you are a trophy or achievement hunter, you’ll firstly want to upgrade the laser, and unlock the ‘mini-shop’ and ‘fuel-tanker’ as they are needed for trophies/achievements. Otherwise stick to upgrading weapons when ever you can afford to. The laser increases in length and destroys enemy projectiles when upgraded. Upgrade the homing missiles to increase their fire rate and fire two missiles instead of one. Each upgrade is really useful and gives players an edge when going for that high score run.

Tip #7 – TRY PLAYING 2-PLAYER CO-OP

Playing 2-player co-op is twice the fun and helps players learn the game’s mechanics more easily. When a player is blown-up in co-op they will respawn after a time if the other player can stay alive. This makes it a little easier than single player and a nostalgically retro fun way to develop your space blaster piloting skills. Be careful though, if you crash into each other you’ll both be space dust. It’s all part of 10 tips to becoming a space blaster master.

Tip #8 – KNOW YOUR WEAPONS, DESTROY THOSE PROJECTILES

It’s often those little red pesky projectiles that end your run, blowing you to smithereens or taking out your mothership. There are ways to deal with these tiny red forces of destruction. As a last resort using a big-bomb will take out all the enemy projectiles on the screen, but big-bombs should be saved if they can. The green glowing big-shot power-up destroys enemy projects as does the blast radius of boom-shot, the upgraded laser, and upgraded mirror-shot. Protectors and shields can also be sacrificed to take out enemy projectiles.

Tip #9 – SLOW DOWN A BIT WHEN SAVING BLASTRONAUTS

In ‘save the colony mode’ the main aim is to rescue all 33 cute astronauts (called blastronauts in-game) and destroy the boss. As the screen edges aren’t lethal in this mode it’s easy to get carried away darting around blowing stuff up. It’s best to slow down a bit. The quicker you destroy stuff the quicker blastronauts float on to the screen needing to be saved. If you go on a shooting rampage you may well get to the boss but it’s more than likely you’ll miss a few blastronauts while you’re busy blasting.

Tip #10 – DON’T FORGET TO UNLOCK THE MINI-SHOP

If you’re a leaderboard high score chaser you’re going to want to unlock the mini-shop from the main shop. Once unlocked players can purchase shields, protectors, and big-bombs on the loading screen before a game starts. This give players an edge and allows them to get higher scores than otherwise possible.
