So, in this article, I will provide you with a list of the best indie games released in August 2026. Aside from that, I will also mention a couple of AAA games that are worth giving a shot.

Kill The Shadow

One of the best indie games released in August 2026 is going to be Kill The Shadow. Regarding the game itself, it is a detective RPG featuring a Chinese cyber-noir world with 2D pixelated characters and 3D environments. As it is a detective RPG, you will not simply be talking to NPCs to gather information.

Deduction is going to be a huge part of the journey. In this game, you investigate cases and put together the evidence you find. One of the best features in this game is that you have a time-related ability that lets you revisit situations to help you understand what is going on.

Also, do note that this game features choice-making, so each of your choices could impact the story. Another thing worth noting is that this game is not an RPG where some of the features are going to be detective-like. Think of it as detective fiction with RPG elements.

This game encourages experimentation and mastery, so if you do feel frustrated at the start, the feeling just gets better as you continue playing. Another thing worth noting is that in this game, you can compete against other players’ ghost runs, and that makes it really addicting.

The game has over 97 percent positive reviews on Steam, and there is even a demo. So, if you are still unsure whether you want to give it a go, just try out the demo and then decide for yourself.

Expeditions: Samurai

Now, before I begin, do note that this game is in Early Access and there is not too much content available. However, so far, the content that is available is pretty solid and did not disappoint. There are some problems you may have, mainly because the game is in Early Access, but for me, the overall experience was quite solid.

The game combines quite a lot of things, and it honestly works. Set in Japan’s Sengoku era, it is a team-based RPG featuring turn-based combat and important decision-making. Your decisions affect the story and also how you proceed through the game. The combat, especially, is very fun, as it features a team-based system with turn-based battles.

You have to be tactical with the combat, or you could be the one who gets defeated. The game is pretty fun, but the main issue with it is the lack of content. There are a few main and side quests, all of which have been covered by us.

Tukoni: Forest Keepers

Tukoni: Forest Keepers is arguably one of the best games released in August 2026, if not the best. It is a hand-drawn, cozy point-and-click adventure game where you play as a forest spirit. That forest spirit travels through a magical woodland.

In this game, there are no guns, no complicated combat, and no stressful bosses. So, what you have to do is explore, meet little woodland creatures, collect things, and solve puzzles. What’s more, you have to collect herbs, discover recipes, and brew tea for the characters you meet.

As someone who holds tea in high regard, that part stood out to me the most. It is basically a cozy game that you would want to play after a long day. This will surely bring you peace, as it isn’t the type of game that is constantly screaming at you to save the world or something similar.

The Cave Diver

Now, this is a game I would not recommend everyone give a shot. It is very weird and not for everyone. If you are claustrophobic, stay away from this game, as that is for your own good. The Cave Diver, as the name suggests, takes you exploring caves. While there is conventional cave exploration involved, there are some pretty weird ones too. You have to explore really narrow caves where you can’t stand or sit.

So, you basically have to drag yourself through them using your hands. Now, this isn’t a game that would be 100 percent worth trying for everyone, but look at how weird it is. There may not be another game providing a similar experience, which makes it worth giving a shot.

The caves in this game are designed to make you uncomfortable. You have to squeeze through tiny passages and try not to get stuck. As you do that, you have to continue progressing deeper into the cave.

The Sinking City 2

If you have played The Sinking City, you remember that the game put heavy emphasis on open-world detective work. The open world made the horror aspect a little less intense than what most people want from a horror game. That is why the developer left behind the open-world structure from the first game.

In The Sinking City 2, there is no open world, and the emphasis on detective work is also reduced. You can investigate clues to uncover secrets, but the emphasis is more on the survival horror aspect. So, instead of the open-world detective work, this game puts you in much tighter environments.

You don’t just have to solve mysteries anymore. You have to explore creepy, interconnected areas and survive against monsters too. So, it is more similar to the Resident Evil games in that aspect.

Twisted Tower

Among the best indie games released in August 2026, I would include Twisted Tower. It is a bizarre game set inside a grotesque 1950s theme park, featuring horror FPS gameplay. Your main goal is to explore a pretty large amusement park that is full of weird, grotesque creatures. There are also plenty of strange areas to discover, and you never quite know what kind of bizarre thing you are going to run into next.

The environment is pretty strange, and the weapons are weird too. The game gives you plenty of reasons to explore, whether it is looking for secrets, figuring out how to get through its different areas, or simply seeing what ridiculous thing is waiting around the next corner. The whole game is very weird, and that is what makes it unique. It is the kind of game that constantly makes you wonder what the developers are going to throw at you next.

The game is for sure enjoyable, and if you don’t trust me, just check the reception on Steam. It has around a 93 percent positive rating from more than 1,400 reviews, so that speaks for itself.

The reviews have genuinely praised it for its environment, visual design, and combat. Being weird doesn’t necessarily mean being bad, and this game is a perfect example of that. The last indie game on the list is going to be Big Walk. This game comes from the developer of Untitled Goose Game. Big Walk is a cooperative first-person adventure puzzle game where you and your friends explore a massive world.

As you explore the massive world, you solve environmental puzzles and enjoy the experience together. This game supports up to 12 people, but I would recommend playing it with fewer friends. I think having up to 4 or 5 players is more than enough to have fun, as you are more likely to stay together and actually enjoy the game as a group.

Also, note that communication is an important part of the gameplay. The game features proximity chat, so if your friends get away from you, they will become quieter. So, make sure to stay together, communicate, and have fun. Figuring out how to cooperate will actually allow you to get more out of the game and make the experience much more enjoyable.

The following are a couple of AAA games that are worth trying out:

Motal Shell 2

Mortal Shell 2 is arguably one of the best Soulslike games. If you played Mortal Shell and didn’t like it, you are not alone. The first game was a little janky and wasn’t that good, but the sequel is much, much better. It is much more ambitious than its predecessor, with an interconnected world.

However, that isn’t the reason why I would recommend this game. The main reason would be the combat, and oh boy, is it good. I would say it has one of the most addicting combat systems ever. The developers have focused on a faster and more aggressive playstyle, and the stamina system has been removed.

That said, it is still a Mortal Shell game, so the Shell system has returned, and it is pretty solid too. There is just too much to do in this game, and the bosses are pretty memorable. The environments and character designs are also solid.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is the third installment in the A Plague Tale series, and it is actually a prequel. This game takes place 15 years before the previous two games and is among the best games released this year. In this game, you play as Sophia, a returning character from the last game.

Now, the first two games focused heavily on stealth and survival. However, this new addition is pretty different. Instead of focusing on stealth and survival, the game moves toward the third-person action-adventure genre. So, there is now going to be more direct combat, exploration, environmental puzzles, RPG elements, and platforming.

So, your protagonist will actually be much more capable, and the experience, to me, was actually better than the first two. Nonetheless, the story is another huge aspect of why this game is a must-try. If that seems like something you would like, I highly, highly recommend giving it a shot.
