Indie games are now getting the main attention, mainly because of how well they performed last year. There are going to be many notable AAA releases this year, but many are still excited about the indie releases. That, to me as a gamer, is a good thing because it will motivate indie developers to make even more bangers.
So, it is a win for all. That said, the first month of 2026 is already over. You may be wondering what the best indie games released in January 2026 are. There are many indie games that were released in January 2026, but here I will mention the ones that I found the best and had the most fun playing.
Disclaimer
This is not a ranking of the games mentioned below. I am not ranking them in any order, as this is simply a list of games that I believe are the best ones released in January. You may have already played some of the games on this list, but that is most likely not the case for everyone. Due to that, the list is completely based on my own experience and knowledge of the indie games released in January 2026.

Escape From Ever After

Escape From Ever After is arguably one of the best indie games released in January 2026, and I probably had the most fun playing it. This game is around 14 to 16 hours long, depending on how long you take on certain boss fights and puzzles. Also, there are difficult options to choose from, so it is not only for the try-hards.
If you like turn-based RPGs, Paper Mario titles, and Ocarina of Time, then I highly recommend giving Escape From Ever After a try. Just like the name suggests, in this game, you have to escape from Ever After, which is a massive company.
Now, this company has taken over all of the storybooks, so your aim as a fairytale character is to beat them. However, you will have to climb the corporate ladder and try to destroy Ever After from the inside. The game is hilarious, sad at times, and pretty engaging.
The only boring part of the game was during the voyage in Treasure Cove. Also, the Stairs of Success are not something I clicked with, but they are completely optional. If you do give it a try, then make sure to give our walkthrough a read to prevent any complications.
Broken Lore: Unfollow

Broken Lore: Unfollow is not for everyone, as this game is quite depressing. So, if you do not like something that may take a toll on your mental health, I would strongly advise against playing this title. That said, for those who love playing psychological horror games, this may be worth a shot.
This game features the story of a young girl, Anne, who is a victim of bullying. It further explores the impact social media can have on a teenager’s life. The whole game features a sinister setting with disturbing yet interesting content catered to a specific audience.
It is a highly underrated title, so not many would even be aware of its release. I found this game pretty interesting, but again, it is not for everyone. If you want to try it, make sure to read our walkthrough for a better experience.
Pathologic 3

Another great psychological horror game released in January 2026 is Pathologic 3. I found this game much more disturbing than Broken Lore: Unfollow, and that made the whole experience pretty solid for me. The town this game is set in is filled with fear, and you are forced to make impossible choices.
This game forces you to judge yourself based on the moral choices you make. Note that this game does not rely on jumpscares at all. All of the scary moments are psychological. You need to balance an Apathy versus Mania system. As the main character will see some horrific sights and make some questionable choices, you will have to balance this system so that he does not lose mental control.
You are also given only 12 days to save the town, but the time can be rewound. Now, you may think this is a helpful feature, but no, it will just add to the agony. Before heading into this game, know that every decision has a serious consequence, and choosing another decision by rewinding time may just worsen the situation.

Heartopia

If the previous two games are too scary and taxing on the mind for you, then you should consider giving Heartopia a try. It is an online multiplayer relaxing game where you can make new friends, as it allows up to 12 players per town, and basically just chill. Heartopia is also free to play, but it can be tempting to spend money, mainly because of its gacha features.
In this game, you do not have to worry about many things. Just play at your own pace, make new friends, meet new townfolks, and build your dream house in a relaxed, open-world town. You can even do fun daily tasks and develop new hobbies like fishing, cooking, gardening, pet care, birdwatching, and more.
There is also user-generated content, so you will not get bored for quite a while. You can even visit your friends’ houses and participate in group activities. It is often compared to the likes of Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley, mainly because of its life simulation mechanics and, of course, the calming vibes. Check out our complete walkthrough for this game if you want to give it a go.
MIO: Memories In Orbit

The last game on this list is going to be MIO: Memories in Orbit. This is actually a pretty solid release that may appeal to almost any type of gamer, as long as they appreciate art. The game features fluid movement and traversal mechanics, making the experience much more enjoyable.
The combat mechanics are also quite polished, so there is no lack of action in this game either. However, these are not the strongest points of MIO. The aspect I would praise the most is its art. The watercolour-inspired aesthetic makes the environment look vibrant and gorgeous.
Additionally, the art is hand-drawn, which is just the cherry on top. I highly recommend giving it a try, especially if you enjoy the art style of games like Ori. If you do try it, make sure to check our walkthroughs to have the best possible experience.
