Best Indie Games Of May 2026

Wax Heads Featured

Welcome to the Into Indie Games list of the best indie games of May 2026.

As indie games are now on the radar of many players, thanks to their strong presence in 2025, they have become increasingly popular. A large number of indie games are released each month since they do not require the same long development cycles as AAA titles. However, there are exceptions such as Hollow Knight: Silksong, mainly due to team size and ambition.

Due to the steady flow of releases, it can be difficult to choose the best indie games released in a particular month. In this list, I will highlight the best indie games released in May 2026 that are worth your attention.

Disclaimer

This is not a ranking of the games mentioned below. I am not ranking them in any order, as this is simply a list of games that I believe are the best ones released in May. You may have already played some of the games on this list, but that is most likely not the case for everyone. Due to that, the list is completely based on my own experience and knowledge of the indie games released in May 2026.

Wax Heads

Wax Heads one of the best Indie Games May 2026

Released on 5th May, arguably one of the best indie games released in May 2026 is Wax Heads. It is a cozy job simulator where you work as an employee in a struggling record store. Your job is to sell records to different customers, but they are often very vague about what they are looking for.

The game delivers a strong cozy atmosphere, and one of its biggest highlights is the original soundtrack, which adds a unique layer to the experience. There is also a proper narrative, and it is engaging to follow the events as they unfold.

Helping customers find what they are looking for is especially enjoyable, particularly when you begin to understand their vague hints. That sense of interpretation and discovery is arguably one of the most satisfying aspects of the game.

It is also not very long, but it is substantial enough that it cannot usually be completed in a single sitting unless you play for seven to eight hours straight.

We also have a complete walkthrough of the game ready, so if you decide to pick it up, which I highly recommend, make sure to check out our guide.

Mixtape

The next game on the list, released in May 2026, is Mixtape. This game provides a solid experience and can be finished in a single sitting. In this game, you follow a group of teenagers who relive important memories from their past. The story unfolds through a mixtape structure where each song triggers a different memory.

The game explores themes of friendship, growing up, and nostalgia. It is also important to note that this is a narratively driven experience rather than an action-heavy one. That said, it is a relatively short game, so it is worth trying if you enjoy emotional storytelling. It offers a focused experience and feels closer to an interactive film.

We also have a complete walkthrough of this game available, so if you plan on picking it up, make sure to check out our guide for assistance.

Motorslice

Released on May 5th, 2026, Motorslice is a parkour-heavy action game where you play as P, a character wielding a chainsaw. Your main objective is to reach the top of a massive megastructure, and along the way you will face many obstacles. Each chapter contains a level that you must complete, and the level design is highly refined.

You need to be creative in how you progress, and once you successfully parkour your way through a level, a major challenge awaits you. At the end of each chapter, there is a boss that you must defeat. To overcome these bosses, you also need to approach them strategically and creatively.

While the game can be difficult because it constantly pushes you to think differently, it is also highly satisfying. I highly recommend trying it if you want a solid parkour-focused experience.

We also have a complete walkthrough of Motorslice available, so make sure to check it out to get the best experience.

Will Follow The Light

will: follow the light one of the best Indie Games May 2026

Another standout game from May 2026 is Will Follow The Light. This game is special because instead of focusing on traditional gameplay, it emphasizes experience, interpretation, and atmosphere. In this game, darkness represents confusion and loss.

On the other hand, light represents memory, truth, and direction. Light can sometimes alter the environment and is also used to trigger memories and reveal hidden paths. You are not simply solving puzzles in the traditional sense; instead, you gradually uncover what happened in this world as you progress.

There is no focus on combat in this game. Instead, you simply explore and travel through the world at a slow and deliberate pace. If this sounds like a game you would enjoy, you should definitely give it a try.

As usual, we have a complete walkthrough ready, so check that out if you plan on playing.

Call of the Elder Gods

The next game on the list is Call of the Elder Gods, which focuses on investigation and atmospheric storytelling. It is a cosmic horror narrative adventure game where you play as a character investigating ancient forces tied to forgotten gods.

The story revolves around uncovering truths about these forgotten gods, which become increasingly disturbing as you progress. As you may already expect, this is not a jump scare-focused horror game. Instead, it emphasizes exploration and investigation, where psychological tension, paranoia, and uncertainty play a major role.

The game is well suited for players who enjoy investigative horror experiences centered on mystery and discovery. If you are planning to pick it up, make sure to check out our walkthrough for the best experience.

Mina The Hollower

Mina the Hollower one of the best Indie Games May 2026

Mina The Hollower is not only one of the best games of May 2026 but also one of the best games released so far this year. In this game, you play as Mina, an elite adventurer known as a Hollower, who is sent to explore a cursed island filled with monsters.

Your goal is to survive the island and uncover what has gone wrong. The game features fast-paced combat from a top-down perspective, where timing and dodging play a crucial role alongside attacking.

It follows a Zelda-like structure, with dungeons and interconnected areas that encourage exploration. The game blends adventure and horror elements, creating a strong atmospheric experience.

Overall, it is considered a must-play title for fans of action-adventure indie games this year. If you run into any issues, we also have a complete walkthrough available to help guide you through the experience.

Other Noteworthy Titles

The following are some other titles you should check out:

007 First Light

007 First Light is one of the strongest releases of the year so far and has received widespread praise for its blend of stealth, action, and cinematic presentation.

This is a third-person action-adventure game that features strong stealth gameplay alongside gunfights, hand-to-hand combat, and spy gadget mechanics. The gameplay is designed around flexibility, allowing players to approach missions in multiple ways depending on their style.

The game also has a noticeable cinematic presence, but it does not feel like a pure interactive movie. Instead, it balances its film-like presentation with engaging and responsive gameplay, making the experience feel active rather than passive. However, it is still more cinematic and story-driven compared to traditional stealth-focused titles.

Another key strength is its high level of polish. The animations, mission design, and overall presentation feel refined and consistent throughout. That said, it is important to note that it is a full AAA release, which is one of the reasons it was not included in the main indie list.

Overall, it stands out as a high-quality modern stealth-action experience and is definitely worth checking out. A complete walkthrough is also available, so if you plan on playing it, you can use that for guidance.

Phonopolis

Phonopolis, developed by Amanita Design, a studio known for creating atmospheric games with a distinctive art style, is a narrative adventure title. The game is set in a dystopian city where the Speaker, the city’s leader, uses propaganda and technology to influence and control its citizens.

You play as one of those citizens, Felix, who is initially under the Speaker’s influence. However, Felix gradually begins to realize that something is seriously wrong with the society around him. After uncovering the truth, his main objective becomes fighting against the system that controls the city.

The gameplay of Phonopolis revolves around environmental puzzles and interacting with the world. The game does not focus on combat. Instead, you uncover the story by exploring the environment, observing your surroundings, and solving puzzles. One of the game’s biggest strengths is how naturally the puzzles are integrated into the narrative rather than feeling like standalone challenges.

The visuals and art style are another major highlight. Every character and environment is handcrafted using physical materials, giving the game a unique and memorable visual identity that stands out from other indie titles.

Overall, Phonopolis is a solid narrative adventure that is definitely worth trying if you enjoy story-driven games. If you decide to pick it up, don’t forget to check out our complete walkthrough guide for assistance.
