THE LAST CRYSTAL

The Last Crystal: A PC/Mac game designed for anyone that loves co-op play. What’s your most cherished gaming experience? You probably remember the people you were playing with just as much as the game, right?

THE LAST CRYSTAL

From early on in the game’s conception, we wanted to create an experience that can be enjoyed by two players in couch co-op mode. This is in part inspired by the nostalgic games we remember from our childhood where we shared the same screen and screamed at each other on the same couch. Many modern games have multiplayer modes that allow two players to play together, but besides sharing the same final goal, the players usually get to act independently of each other.

In The Last Crystal, however, your actions directly affect each other. The screen can only be stretched so far, so you will need to coordinate your movements! Both players are equally important, and you will need to work closely together to progress through the challenging areas of the game. We have designed novel game elements that are sure to tease your minds and test your skills (and test the strength of your relationship… just kidding!).

THE STORY

The Last Crystal tells the story of two adventurers, Elia and Ezio, and their quest to find the elusive Last Crystal. The crystal is said to reside in an ancient temple, known as Aechuporith. Legend says that anyone who enters the temple is never to be seen again. However, Elia and Ezio have a compelling reason to retrieve the crystal, which will be revealed through the game.

The Last Crystal continues the tradition of 2+ gaming experiences: A co-op adventure game with open exploration, real-time action combat & cooperative puzzles. As you explore expansive maps, you and your closest companions will discover dozens of weapons, a menagerie of monsters, deadly traps, and new allies that can help you continue an adventure filled with action combat in an open-exploration environment.

TEAM UP OR PERISH

Don’t let your friend die! They will need your help, and you will need theirs to succeed!

The Last Crystal is a collaborative game that emphasizes the equal importance of both players. Each character is to be customizable to fit different playstyles, but both players have essential roles to play to succeed in the game. Puzzles can only be solved when both players are alive, including switches that are operated when the two players stand on them at the same time. Protecting and keeping each other alive is necessary to progress through the game.

TWO-PLAYER WIELDED WEAPONS, AND ITEM-SHARING

One of the unique points about The Last Crystal is its two-player weapon design. There are some weapons that can only be used when both players have it equipped. One of these is the Staff of Elements. This staff has two parts: the Sun Staff and the Moon Staff. When both characters equip one staff each, they can pass a ball of elemental energy between them. For example, the Wind element operates switches and moves boxes when the energy passes through the characters, and the Fire element can damage enemies and set things on fire.

Players share the items found in the game. When one player has an item equipped, the other player can grab the same item from them by simply selecting it from their inventory. This mechanic can be used to solve puzzles, so that you can use the item that you need when you are separated, but it can also cause some unintended (or intended?) chaos when players grab them at an inopportune time. Have fun, but remember that your partner needs to stay alive for you to progress!

ACQUIRE UNIQUE ABILITIES TO HELP EACH OTHER

Both players can unlock abilities by spending crystal shards at a Guardian Stone. The shards are collected throughout your journey when you successfully solve puzzles. There are various abilities for you to choose from, and you will need to discuss with your partner which set of skills work well together to help with your journey. For example, one of you can acquire Camouflage to become invisible so that the other can execute a Spin Attack to destroy multiple enemies at once. Or you can acquire Slow Soul while your partner gets Healing Touch, so that you can deliberately enter spirit form to slow down enemies, and your partner can revive you after. Build a unique strategy based on your own play styles and preferences.

ULTIMATE CO-OP LORE

Only two can enter the temple, and they have to stay as a pair to succeed. Throughout the game, the players will meet creatures and allies that have attempted to retrieve the Last Crystal. All of them entered the temple as a pair – the red panda with his girlfriend, the ghost with his brother, the cockatiel with his egg, etc. Each one of creatures tell the tale of how they got separated with their partner – because of arguments, negligence, the temple’s interference. They will become your allies when you help them, and give you clues on how you can avoid the same fate.
