Indie games now have a strong presence, but it was not always like this. Over the past couple of years, we have seen more and more indie games being talked about across the industry. However, before that, there were very few indie titles that truly became the focus of major discussions. This began to change in 2024 and became especially noticeable in 2025.
Indies have now conquered 2025, and the world is fully aware of how great these titles can be. In fact, the Game of the Year and the title being talked about the most this year is none other than an indie game. This clearly shows how indie games have evolved and managed to dominate the industry in 2025, and they are very likely to continue doing so in the future.
While we should never underestimate indie developers, as they are extremely creative and innovative, AAA developers may view this rise as a challenge and respond by improving their own games. Since AAA studios also have much larger budgets, it will be very interesting to see how the gaming industry evolves and moves forward in the coming years.

The Evolution Of Indie Games

I will not compare each year individually to show how indie games have evolved because that would be too much. However, you can clearly see the shift in momentum and within the industry after The Game Awards and Golden Joystick Awards 2025. Indie games are now talked about far more often, and this is becoming more and more normal.
I love indie games, and it was an amazing feeling to see 2025 being dominated by them. In 2024, there were many great indie titles, but they were not as popular or widely discussed. There were some strong presences, but do you think it was even remotely close to how things were this year? No.
2024 had some of the best indie games that received critical acclaim, with many reaching above a 90 Metascore. There was a lot of discussion around games like Balatro, Animal Well, and Slay the Princess. Balatro even had a strong presence at The Game Awards 2024.

However, in 2025, the situation was completely different. More than half of the Game of the Year nominations at The Game Awards 2025 were indie games, which clearly shows how dominant they were. This is if you count Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 as an indie title. Even if you do not count it as an indie, half of the nominees were still indie games, which is extremely impressive.
Indies made history this year, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 deserves a lot of credit for that. On top of that, indie games were nominated across many other categories, and it is safe to say that this year did not belong to AAA games.
An Indie Game Won The Most Prestigious Award This Year

Many indie games were released this year, but one that stood at the pinnacle was none other than Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Ever since it was released, I was 100 percent sure that this game was going to win the Game of the Year award. Winning this award is not simple, and it is definitely not something every game can pull off.
This year had many strong contenders, so it may have been a tough decision for the media. However, I was convinced that it would win the award and many more. The game not only won the Game of the Year award, but it also took home eight additional awards, making history.
No other game has won as many awards as it has. It also received the most nominations ever in the history of The Game Awards. This speaks volumes and shows how important indie games have become. An almost clean sweep at the biggest gaming event of the year is unheard of.

Not only that, but Expedition 33 also managed to achieve a clean sweep at the Golden Joystick Awards by winning every category it was nominated in, including Ultimate Game of the Year. This made it clear to many that Expedition 33 was going to dominate The Game Awards as well, and that is exactly what happened.
Most of the other indie games lost to Expedition 33, but Hollow Knight: Silksong did manage to win Best Action/Adventure Game. Many people are not happy with the results of this year’s Game Awards, but in the end, indie games have risen, and they are most likely going to continue rising.
How Indie Games Dominated 2025

I have been saying that indie games dominated this year, but I have not mentioned all of the games that made a real difference. Award shows matter a lot because they clearly show dominance. However, there are also other factors we need to look at in order to fully declare how indie games dominated this year.
Indie games accounted for around 25 percent of total Steam sales. This is a huge number, especially considering how many games were released this year. The AAA presence was massive, with several big releases throughout the year. That makes the 25 percent figure even more impressive.

Hollow Knight: Silksong launched with almost 600,000 concurrent players on Steam. It is extremely rare for an indie game to pull numbers like that. The launch even caused storefronts to crash, which may never have happened before at this scale. This happened mainly because of the massive hype and the fact that pre-orders were not available beforehand. When everyone who wanted to play the game bought it at the same time, the storefronts could not handle the traffic and crashed.
Regardless, this is still a highly impressive achievement, especially for an indie game. On top of that, Expedition 33, Dispatch, Megabonk, PEAK, and R.E.P.O. all launched with massive concurrent player counts. The indie game with the second-highest concurrent player peak this year was Schedule I.
Critical And Cultural Recognition + Massive Market Presence

Indie games like Expedition 33 won many awards at different events. That shows the game has recognition from both the media and, of course, the fans. Not only that, but indie games have been very well critically acclaimed by both critics and players.
Many games received high scores on Metacritic and very positive reviews on Steam. Putting that together with the nominations and wins at award ceremonies, you can clearly see the critical recognition they have received. After such domination, sales for many indie games, especially Expedition 33, increased significantly.
However, how did they achieve cultural recognition? Let me explain. Indie games did not just succeed commercially this year. While commercial success is one of the goals for developers, this year, it was clear that the developers also cared about their fandom.

These releases did not just become successful; they shaped industry conversations about creativity and player choice. Many future games are likely to follow the formula of successful indie titles, especially Expedition 33, and that is a clear sign of cultural recognition.
Regarding market presence, as I mentioned before, around 25 percent of Steam’s total revenue came from indie games. That is about $4.5 billion of the $17.7 billion in revenue. Not only that, but half of the best-performing games on Steam were indie titles. This shows that indie games went toe to toe with AAA releases and dominated the competition.
Final Thoughts

I have been playing all types of games ever since I was a kid. I love indie games and their creativity. Since the developers usually do not have a large budget, they focus much more on creativity and on making the fandom happy rather than just making the game as visually impressive as possible.
There were many good releases this year, and I would recommend giving them a try. At the very least, play the games I have mentioned in this feature so you can experience the quality of these indie titles. The developers really outdid themselves, and I was genuinely impressed after playing these releases.
After this successful run, I am very optimistic that more and more indie developers will focus on creativity. This will keep competition high, and that is the best thing for us gamers. As long as there is strong competition, we will continue to get good games.
So, hopefully in the coming year, we will see more great indie games and may even witness a performance similar to what we saw this year. That is a pretty optimistic outlook, but there is nothing wrong with being optimistic.
