How to Market an Indie Game?

Getting coverage for games is tough but we hope we can help through our best marketing advice for indie developers and marketing indie games. We’ve tried our best to answer the question, how to market an Indie Game?

Network

Through social media and irl meet with your peers in the games industry and interact. There are plenty of paid and free events that you can find on meetup and eventbrite. Game Jams are a great way to meet people and hone your skills. This interaction will enhance your games and open up opportunities.

Cultivate an audience

Through social media and irl, interact with the type of person you want to play your games. For indies every player counts, treat everyone with respect and listen to what they say about your game. Find opinion formers, not sheep, you need people who are willing to try something new.

Interact with the media

Press is invaluable in getting your game publicity. Get someone to or learn how to write a press release. Find media the same size as your studio like blogs or specialist sites rather that going for IGN straight away, it’s tough to get on the big sites. You can always submit an article on Into Indie Games which we edit and post for you, we’ve not turned down a studio yet. https://intoindiegames.com/write-an-article/

Create wonderful and unique games

Drawing out what makes your game unique and special will give you an angle and potentially another audience. If it’s a medieval fps do a blog dressed as knight and contact your local recreational medieval society to try it out. The one thing on indie we would not cover is a match three title with nothing new to offer, but we’ll see when that game comes along as we think every game deserves a chance.

Create your own content

You’ve all the tools you need in the palm of your hand to create audio, written and video content. Take advantage and start creating exciting, original and emotive content. The goal for marketing is engagement, that’s the absolute key.

Go local

Don’t go too big too fast. Find local events, local people and local games networks. Join in with them and create a pool of people who are similar to you. We can all achieve so much more together that we can separately.

Create a Marketing Strategy

Even if it’s just five bullet points in an email to your team. Structure some key marketing beats, occasions in the games journey where you can reach out to press, audience and community. Focus energy on these key points. This is especially important when you have limited resources.

Be prepared for a challenge

Never lose heart, getting indie games out there is incredibly tough and we applaud you for doing it. Remember marketing in gaming is just as important as the actual game. You have worked so hard to make it now get out there and tell people about it. Making games is a journey, learn and get better at every stage. Be ready to try, fail and try again.
