Indie Dev Interview: Bramble: The Mountain King

Please could you introduce yourself?

My name is Fredrik and I am co-founder and Design Director of Dimfrost Studio.

And could you introduce your studio?

Dimfrost Studio was founded in 2017 by me, Ellinor and Mikael. Our vision was to make narrative strong games with an art style that stands out from the crowd. Since then we have grown a lot and now we have a super talented team working in the heart of Norrköping in Sweden

Can you tell us about Bramble?

Bramble is a dark adventure game with horror elements based on Nordic folklore. We wanted to make a game with our narrative pillars but also about something close to our hearts and where we grew up.

How did you come up with the concept?

We wanted to do something Nordic. First we thought about vikings but that has already been done a lot. So we looked into our folklore and thought that it can be really interesting to explore and introduce to the world.

Can you tell us a little about the gameplay?

We are inspired by games like Brothers, Inside, Limbo, Unravel and Little Nightmares but we wanted to do our own twist on it. We combine platforming with puzzles and big boss fights. We also have small charming mechanics here and there you can use to interact with creatures.

The Nordic folklore inspiration, is that something that came from childhood memories?

Yes, all stories come from our childhood. These stories were told back in the days to try to keep children away from the forest and rivers. So parents told them about trolls in the forest or “Näcken” in the river in order to scare them because they didn’t want them to get lost or drown. We have collected a lot of those stories and put them in the game.

What’s your next step for the game and plans for the future?

We are very much looking forward to the release in April and see what players will think of it and then we will see what the future holds.

How do you hope audiences will respond to the game?

We hope they will respond in a similar way they did to the demo. It was really amazing to watch all the youtube and tiktok videos with reactions and read what people wrote in the community. If we can have similar reactions to the full game I will be very happy.

When is it out and how can people stay updated?

Bramble will be out 27th April and you can follow us on Facebook and Twitter
