Indie Dev Interview: Nick Fokias, Dope Games – Definitely Not Fried Chicken

What are they putting on the chicken at Definitely Not Fried Chicken? Well, it’s certainly not a secret recipe of eleven herbs and spices.

DNFC is a management sim game in which you run a cartel using fronts to launder the ill gotten games of your thriving empire, as you battle for dominance on the streets of Sunny Paradise City.

We caught up with Nick from Dope Games to find out what’s in the special sauce which he’s cooking up in the kitchen and how he likes his fried chicken.

DNFC is available now to purchase in open Beta with early access coming to Steam this Autumn.

Please could you introduce yourself?

My name is Nick Fokias, I’m a programmer and the owner of Dope Games Ltd.

And could you introduce your studio?

Dope Games is a very small studio (of one person), although I do work with other freelance developers and artists. Currently working on the studio’s first game Definitely Not Fried Chicken (DNFC)!

Can you tell us about your DNFC?

DNFC is a management sim about running a drugs empire and setting up legitimate businesses to sell your drugs through!

So some customers are coming in and ordering chicken and others are ordering the stuff from the back – if you catch my drift 😉

DNFC

So it’s about selling chicken and building a drugs empire?

Yes, it’s about selling fried chicken to disguise your drug production business!

But not only fried chicken, there are 5 other legitimate business types you can set up too! These are; laundromats, doughnut shops, lobster restaurants, nightclubs and casinos.

Each type of business has a preferred drug. The game has three main types of drugs; Cannabis, Meth and Cocaine which each have three ‘strains’.

A big part of the game is setting up the right conditions in your factory to make the best quality drugs (as these fetch higher prices).

How, where, when did you come up with such a concept?

I came up with the concept on a sunny morning sipping coffee in my garden, I thought what would it be like to combine the Sims with Breaking Bad!

How important is it to be original and just go with what you wanted to do?

It’s very important to stay loyal to the vision as I believe that’s what gives the game heart.

Can you tell us about some of your creative decisions in development?

One big creative decision was that I wanted the game to take place all on a single map.

The result is really cool in that you can watch your cannabis plant get watered, dried, cut up, boxed, shipped in your vehicles and purchased at one of your businesses without ever leaving the map – and nothing is hidden or faked.

Do you occasionally enjoy some fried chicken?

Of course! Buffalo and Korean fried chicken are particular favourites 😛

When is it out and how can people stay updated?

The game is available for purchase in open beta right now here: https://dnfc.xsollasitebuilder.com/

Alternatively, the game will be going into early access this Autumn on Steam, you can wishlist it here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1036240/Definitely_Not_Fried_Chicken/
