It goes without saying that indie games dominated 2025. After all, the game that took home the prestigious Game of the Year at The Game Awards, was none other than the indie masterpiece Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Not only that, it also went on to become one of the most awarded games of all time, surpassing titles like Elden Ring and The Last of Us Part II, which is an extremely significant achievement.
Last year, the top five best-rated games on Metacritic were all indie titles. That alone shows how dominant indie games were in 2025, and there is every possibility that we could see something similar again this year. The groundwork for that trend is already visible, as 50 percent of the top best-rated games of 2026 so far are indie titles.
Indie Games Represent Half of the Year’s Top 10 Rankings

The rise of indie games in recent years has not been unusual, but it has certainly been notable. Many players tend to focus on the AAA release cycle, which is understandable, as larger budgets often lead to higher expectations and visibility.
However, one could argue that smaller budgets are exactly what allow indie developers to take more creative risks. With fewer commercial constraints, developers are often able to experiment more freely, and that creativity is frequently reflected in the final product. That has been a defining factor behind many standout indie releases in recent years.
That trend has clearly continued into this year as well, showing that the success of indie games in 2025 was far from a fluke. With roughly half of the year already accounted for, indie games make up 50 percent of the current Top 10 best-rated games. This data is drawn from review aggregator Metacritic.
On OpenCritic, the pattern is even more pronounced, with six indie games appearing among the Top 10 best-rated titles of 2026 so far. For reference, on Metacritic, the highest-rated indie games in the Top 10 include Mina the Hollower, Schrödinger’s Call, Mewgenics, Hermit and Pig, and Titanium Court.
On the other hand, on OpenCritic, the indie entries include Mina the Hollower, Schrödinger’s Call, Lost and Found Co., Mewgenics, Hermit and Pig, and Esoteric Ebb.
AAA Titles Still Maintain Strong Presence Alongside Indie Breakout Hits

While it is impressive to see indie games performing at this level, AAA titles are still holding a strong position. There are several major upcoming releases, including Grand Theft Auto VI, which means that the overall landscape is still highly competitive.
As a result, this year remains unpredictable, but betting against indie games continuing their strong momentum would not be a safe assumption.
Ultimately, much will depend on the major releases scheduled for the rest of the year, and it is also worth noting that surprise launches and shadow drops could still shift the balance significantly.
