Battletech dev Harebrained Schemes to be bought by Paradox Interactive

Seven years since it was founded, Harebrained Schemes is independent no more. The Shadowrun dev will soon be an internal studio for Paradox Interactive.

Harebrained Schemes is perhaps one of the most prominent indie developers out there. After having met crowdfunding success with Shadowrun Returns, it went on to develop two more Shadowrun RPGs and most recently released the mech strategy game Battletech. Now, the studio will be joining Paradox Interactive as an internal studio.

Paradox Interactive published Harebrained Schemes’ latest title, Battletech, so the relationship isn’t the wildest thing in the world (certainly not as wild as Grimes and Elon Musk, for one).

Indeed, Harebrained Schemes has much to gain from joining forces with Paradox. Harebrained’s CEO Jordan Weisman says this: “As the scale of our games has grown and the marketplace has gotten extremely noisy we felt that HBS needed to team up with a company that could provide us the financial stability and marketing expertise that would allow us focus on [sic] what we love doing – making great games and stories.”

This also probably means that Harebrained Schemes will no longer have to go crowdfunding its projects.

So what does this mean for you, then? If you happened to back Battletech on Kickstarter, you are going to get a complimentary copy of Stellaris from Paradox Interactive. Huzzah, freebies!

Indie studios merge and divide all the time. Take Thunderful for instance, which was formed after the creators of SteamWorld and Fe combined. Meanwhile, if you’ve got an itch for a turn-based RPG not very unlike Shadowrun Returns, have a look at our review of Torment: Tides of Numenera.
