Cuphead to finally release in September for PC and Xbox One

Cuphead has a release date at last, and this gorgeous cartoon-inspired run-and-gun game will be hitting digital stores in September.

Cuphead feels like it’s been in development for roughly forever, but at this year’s E3, it finally received a release date. Studio MDHR’s incredible-looking run-and-gun sidescroller will release on September 29th. The release date was revealed in a trailer shown during the Xbox Media Briefing, and the game will be console exclusive to Xbox One. It will also be releasing on PC across both Windows 10 and Steam platforms.

There’s a lot that can be written about the sheer charm and authenticity that Cuphead exudes, but none of it can compare to actually watching the game in motion. The game has been in development for a while now, and the labour expended on it really shows. Check out yesterday’s trailer below.

Cuphead’s aesthetic is influenced by the cartoons of the 1930s, but that influence is far from being skin deep. The developers have gone out of their way to create hand-drawn cel animation and watercolour backgrounds. There’s even an original jazz soundtrack.

The game’s subtitle appears to be “Don’t Deal With The Devil”, and that is about the only thing we know about the game’s story as well. The game’s protagonists, Cuphead and Mugman are trying to pay back their debt to the devil, and clearly their adventures are going to take them to interesting places.

The game itself is a side-scrolling run-and-gun shooter with a heavy focus on boss battles. You can play both singleplayer and in local co-op, and you can choose to play as either protagonist of the game.

Cuphead is now available for pre-order on Microsoft Store (for both Xbox One and Windows 10, thanks to Xbox Play Anywhere), as well as over at Steam.
