There are a few major events held every year where games earn certain titles. The biggest and most important one is The Game Awards, but there has always been a concern. That concern is about indie games, as they are often overlooked mainly because of their scope and size.
AAA games often overshadow them, and that is somewhat understandable, which is why it seemed necessary to have a separate event for indie games. So, last year, Indie Game Awards was founded, and its first ceremony was held on December 19, 2024. That time of the year is coming again, and soon we will see which game takes away the most prestigious award. To no one’s surprise, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Hollow Knight Silksong, and Hades 2 have been nominated for the Indie Game of the Year (GOTY) award.
The Competition Is Extremely Tough This Year
This year, AA and indie games have absolutely dominated and overshadowed AAA titles. So, it wouldn’t be surprising if an AA or indie game took home top honors at The Game Awards as well. That also means the competition will be tougher at the Indie Game Awards.

- Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector
- Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
- Consume Me
- Hades II
- Hollow Knight: Silksong
- Keep Driving
- Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo
The list is filled with incredible games, and selecting a Game of the Year from it would be a real challenge. Moreover, the most notable titles that shocked the world are Expedition 33, Hades 2, and Silksong. These three games absolutely dominated the year, with Expedition 33 being the fan favorite.
For reference, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the highest user-rated game on Metacritic of all time. However, some fans have raised concerns that this game shouldn’t even be in the indie category. Although it qualifies as an indie, it is technically a AA game, and many feel it should not be on the list.
Even so, the nominees have already been announced, and they are unlikely to change. Additionally, Absolum and Blue Prince are also standout titles in the lineup. Finally, the Indie Game Awards will go live on December 18 at 3:30 PM PT / 6:30 PM ET on Six One Indie’s YouTube or Twitch channel.
