The Golden Joystick Awards live event was finally held yesterday. It is one of the biggest events in the industry and features several Game of the Year awards. The most prestigious award of all is the Ultimate Game of the Year Award, which, to no one’s surprise, was taken home by Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
However, that was not all. The game was nominated in seven different categories, and it won every single one of them. This was a complete sweep, and such a result has never been seen before. Expedition 33 literally won in all the categories it was nominated for at the Golden Joystick Awards 2025.
This almost seems unfair to the other games that were nominated in those categories. However, the majority believes it is completely fair, given the game’s quality. For reference, the game was nominated in Best Storytelling, Best Visual Design, Best Soundtrack, Best Lead Performer, Best Supporting Character, Best Studio of the Year, and Ultimate Game of the Year.
Expedition 33 Sweeps The Golden Joystick Awards 2025
The Golden Joystick Awards is arguably one of the biggest and most important ceremonies held each year. While it may not have the same scope as The Game Awards, it is still extremely important. So it is pretty surprising to see a new game that did not receive much marketing and is a AA title sweep the whole show.
Fans are wondering if it had been nominated in other categories, it would have totally won those, too. There was little to no doubt that Expedition 33 was going to win the Ultimate Game of the Year Award. That is despite the presence of titles like Death Stranding 2, Donkey Kong Bonanza, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, and Hollow Knight Silksong.
The game has made history, and that is not the only thing it has accomplished so far. It has been making history ever since it was released. First, Expedition 33 set the record for being the best user-rated game on Metacritic. Second, it became the most nominated game at The Game Awards with 12 nominations. Lastly, it completed a full sweep at the recent Golden Joystick Awards.
This is not just a rare phenomenon. It is more of a once-in-a-lifetime scenario. While next year’s game, such as GTA 6, may set a different precedent, it is worth noting that the difference in budget, scope, and team size between these games is like heaven and earth. You simply cannot compare them.
Similar Performance Expected At The Game Awards 2025
The majority agrees that Expedition 33 deserves every award it won at the Golden Joystick Awards. However, many are now thinking that this game might even win the whole thing at The Game Awards 2025. A sweep at the biggest event of 2025 would be the cherry on top and something that would shake the industry to its core.
The game has been nominated in 12 categories. It is highly unlikely that it will win every single one, but even if it wins the majority, history will be made.
