This year has been a pretty solid one for indie games. Indies have shown near total dominance over AAA games, and that has increased competition even more across the industry.
Even major awards like TGA were dominated by indie titles, with Expedition 33 winning in nine categories and taking home what many consider the most prestigious award of all. This outcome highlighted just how strong and influential indie development has become.
There has not been any shortage of indie titles this year. Many of them received impressively high scores from critics. One game in particular, Hades 2, has stood out, as it is now among the top 10 best-rated games on OpenCritic. This is arguably a massive achievement for both the game and the indie scene as a whole.
Hades 2 Reaches Top 10 Best-Rated OpenCritic Games
Hades 2 is currently sitting at the 9th spot with a score of 95. It is important to note that games ranked from 4 to 9 all share the same score of 95.
This means that Red Dead Redemption 2, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Grand Theft Auto IV, Elden Ring, Astro Bot, and Hades 2 all have the exact same rating. Despite sharing identical scores, their placements on the list still differ.
However, review counts vary significantly, as some games on the list have over 200 reviews, while one in particular, GTA 4, has only six. This can make the ranking feel unfair to some players, especially when a newer title like Hades 2 appears lower on the list despite matching the top scores.
Also, it is worth noting that the top three best-rated games spot is taken by Super Mario Odyssey, Baldur’s Gate 3, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
That said, it seems likely that games with the same score are ranked based on their release order. Since Hades 2 was released more recently, it makes sense why it did not rank above the others. Still, it is a massive achievement for the game to even make it into the top 10 best-rated OpenCritic games.
An Almost Perfect Roguelike
No game can be perfect, as someone will always find an issue with it in one way or another. However, Hades 2 is the type of game that comes remarkably close to being an almost perfect roguelike. This isn’t only my opinion; the reviews speak for themselves.
The game reached over 110,000 concurrent players on Steam and holds overwhelmingly positive reviews. This is not common and is something that rarely happens in the industry, especially for a game to receive such a high volume of positive feedback.
That said, roguelikes are not for everyone, and that fact makes this achievement even more spectacular.
