Sneak into spaceships when Heat Signature launches next week
12 Sep, 2017
Coming from the developers of Gunpoint, Heat Signature is a game about taking on missions to infiltrate and bumble around in spaceships.
Suspicious Developments, the team responsible for humorous spy thriller and window-smashing simulator Gunpoint, has announced that its next game will release on 21st September. It’s titled Heat Signature, and it involves considerably less window smashing.
It does, however, retain Gunpoint’s basic modus operandi: you take on missions to sneak into places and conduct operations like stealing, rescuing, capturing or killing. This time, instead of buildings, you have spaceships, and the view is top-down instead of side-scrolling. And of course, expect lots of things to go wrong, as the game emphasises emergent gameplay.
Expect ship parts to come off as you wreak havoc across it, which could work to your benefit—or cause you to be ejected out into space, dying in a cold, dark vacuum. To make things particularly unpredictable, your goals and the ship layouts will be randomised per mission.
If that smells like roguelike to you, then you might be pleased to hear that the game does feature permadeath. Every life you play in the game will be its own character, existing in the same galaxy as everyone else. If your character dies, you’ll find yourself in the shoes of a new character with a new starting kit.
While there will be no pre-ordering for Heat Signature, you can wishlist the game on Steam and get alerted when the game launches. Right now, it’s coming out only for PC. The developer’s official stance on whether the game will come out on other platforms is “dunno”. Also check out the official website for a chance to be immortalised as a Steam Trading Card. You’ll make your mum proud.
