Hollow Knight: Silksong is one of the best, if not the best, games released in 2025. The game attracted enormous hype even before its reveal, as many fans had been waiting for years for just a small teaser. At every major award show, fans eagerly anticipated whether the game would make an appearance. However, most of the time, they were disappointed.
That said, when the game finally appeared at Gamescom 2025 along with its release date, the fandom showed immense love for it. Even the previous game in the franchise, Hollow Knight, reached a massive new all-time peak in popularity. Similarly, on launch day, Hollow Knight: Silksong surprised everyone by crashing several major storefronts. It also reached nearly 600,000 players on Steam, showcasing how much the fandom had been anticipating its release.
Despite this, the game did not win Game of the Year at The Game Awards, which left many fans disappointed. Those fans can now rest easy, as the game has finally won the most prestigious award at the Steam Awards 2025.
Hollow Knight: Silksong Takes Home Game Of The Year Award

While winning the Game of the Year award at the Steam Awards may not be as prestigious as winning at the Golden Joystick Awards or The Game Awards 2025, it is still an impressive achievement. It should also be noted that the votes are conducted solely by the fandom. This means the result was decided entirely by the players who have actually experienced the game.
That said, those fans likely have not played all of the games nominated for the GOTY award. Some might also argue that it seems a bit unfair, as Silksong has far more players on Steam than other nominees like Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and Dispatch.
All things considered, Hollow Knight: Silksong deserved this award. Expedition 33 had already enjoyed almost two clean sweeps at previous awards. It was finally time for another game to enjoy the spotlight.
On that note, Expedition 33 won the Best Soundtrack award, Silent Hill F won Outstanding Visual Style, and Dispatch won the Outstanding Story-Rich Award.
A Long-Awaited Win

Given how long the fandom has waited for this game’s release, this award seems well deserved. The fans were clearly passionate about it. Many were seen throwing tantrums on social media, with some even sarcastically commenting on Expedition 33 winning awards instead.
Silksong is an excellent game, and if you have not tried it yet, you absolutely should. The scope of this indie title is enormous. It is truly impressive how such a small team managed to create and curate this masterpiece.
