Indie Game Releases of the Week: August 9 to 15, 2021

This week in indie games, we have the adventures The Plane Effect and Button City, action-adventure Foreclosed, RPG Black Book, and more.

August is shaping up to be one of the most remarkable months for indie games this year, with terrific-looking releases coming out left, right, and center. We’ve got colorful adventures to brighten your day, grimy dystopias to make shudder, a romantic puzzler about a city on fire, and a Slavic-themed RPG about a young sorceress.

Black Book

Black Book is an adventure RPG in which you play as Vasilisa, a young woman destined to become a witch. After her betrothed dies under mysterious circumstances, Vasilisa sets out to find the Black Book, which can grant her any wish, should she uncover its seals.

Inspired by Northern Slavic folk tales and mythology, Black Book is set in a world where the mythological exists alongside the mundane. It features extensive world exploration and card-based combat.

Button City

Button City is a narrative adventure game about a shy little fox named Fennel, who’s out to save the arcade in the town he’s just moved into.

Featuring bright colors and a diorama world waiting to be explored, Button City features a story of friendship, community, and 90s nostalgia. You can also play 3 in-game arcade games!

Fire Tonight

Fire Tonight is a narrative puzzle game about a couple trying to reunite in a city on fire. Set in 1990, the game has you rotating the world to find new perspectives and discover new ways to reach your beloved.

And of course, the whole time, the city is increasingly engulfed in flames. No pressure.

The Plane Effect

The Plane Effect is a dystopian adventure game in which a lonely office worker struggles to get home against increasingly overwhelming odds. As the protagonist Solo heads ever onward, you must also solve puzzles along the way to keep him going.

The game also features an ‘assisted mode’ to help you out with the puzzles, should you need it.

Foreclosed

August 12 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch

Foreclosed is an action-adventure game set in a sci-fi cyberpunk world where protagonist Evan Kapnos’ identity has been foreclosed for an unknown reason. Evan must now escape the city before his identity and implants are auctioned off.

The game’s comic book style tells a story of sci-fi intrigue and thrill, while the gameplay features an RPG-style skill tree and augmentation implants to improve your abilities.
