Indie developers are often appreciated for their creativity. Even with less budget they put together something that often attracts high praise. This year has been full of surprises and indie and AA games dominated it entirely. While there have been a few impressive AAA game, this year will go down as the year for indie and AA games, especially if they dominate The Game Awards 2025 too.

That said, AI has been on the rise and while it cannot match the creativity of humans, it is still being considered a threat by many. However, some consider it to provide more opportunities for the talented people as it can make their life easier. Among them is Shuhei Yoshida, one of the famous internet personalities and former PlayStation Boss. He thinks that Indie games will be first ones to pioneer new possibilities of AI.

Shuhei Yoshida worked at Sony for over 30 years. He helped build PlayStation, and later on, after spending decades at the company, announced his retirement. While he has retired from the company he doesnt intend to retire from the industry. That is because Yoshida is still passionate about gaming and want to support the indie dvelopers.

He thinks that the indie community is the one that gives birth to new genres and innovation. That is because AAA games have become too big to try something new. Recently Yoshida appeared at Osaka Indie Games Summit 2025 and in an interview with Game Spark, he shared his thoughts on the use of AI in game development along with how indie games will be the one to dicover new possiblities of using it.

I believe it’s indie developers who are the first to pioneer not only the new possibilities of AI, but also new technologies in general. That’s why indie games are so fun.

Yoshida believes that from indie to AAA, developers from most of the game companies are using AI. They are using AI in game development to save time. One of the examples he gave regarding an indie game using AI is Hanashi no Hanashi. In this game you advance your story by conversing with an AI controlled character.

AI is already being used in all aspects of game development, whether by indie or major companies.

Ultimately, he thinks, the indie developers are going to be discovering new possibilities of implementing this controversial technology.
