Shadow Over Isolation: lovecraftian style horror
26 Aug, 2016
Shadow Over Isolation is a first-person adventure that looks to construct a narrative that avoids popular horror tropes. In the spirit of Stanley Kubrick’s cinema aesthetics and H.P. Lovecraft’s storytelling, Naughty Shinobi are looking to create an experience that conveys the insanity of the unknown.
“The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear. And the oldest and strongest kind of fear is the fear of the unknown.” H.P. Lovecraft
The game takes place in 1984, Kapra County, Georgia – a once prosperous and vibrant farming town. Upon returning home, Ryan Kappel uncovers disturbing lies and secrets that permeate his town’s history.
The game presents a variety of puzzles in beautifully detailed environments, with a protagonist who is contemplating his cosmic significance. In conveying these grand ideas, the game uses a restrained use of sound and eerie isolation to unnerve the player. Naughty Shinobi claims that Shadow Over Isolation is, “Content that stretches the imagination and isn’t afraid to embrace mature, adult storytelling.”

The developers specify that the main story will be 6+ hours long and offer side stories that build upon the world’s fiction. The game also offers multiple paths and non-linear problem solving, which will reward the player’s detective skills and create a sense of discovery. Moreover, the game also offers an interactive inventory system so players can scrutinise and study items they receive.
Fittingly, the game’s release date is still unknown. However, it is meant to hit Steam in the first half of 2017 on both PC and Mac.
