SpecialEffect Raises £250,000 Through Twin Town Challenge Car Rally
07 Jun, 2016
Video games charity SpecialEffect raised the ambitious figure through the car rally that ran between Witney in England and Le Touquet in France.
The charity, SpecialEffect, is focused on helping people with physical disabilities play video games, which is a cause we can all get behind, really. The Twin Town Challenge, however, saw quite the outpouring of participants and sponsors, the latter of which included the likes of SEGA, King.com, Sumo Digital, Turn 10 Studios and Ghost Games (the current Need for Speed developers). Participants included teams from Green Man Gaming, GAME, Sumo Digital and Playground Games.
Participants in the rally would have to drive one of a hundred cars costing no more than £500 each, and ride them through the English Channel, into Witney’s French twin town, Le Touquet. The event, which took place from 27th May to 31st May (a bank holiday weekend), also involved car boxing, blind driving, car booty and even a treasure hunt. It was basically like a real world video game with relatively inexpensive cars. There were apparently bonus points for the best-dressed car and team, which led to a rally consisting of pink suited men, Mexican bandits and shell fish. See, what did I tell you? Basically a real world video game.
The cars that participated in the rally were then donated for an auction at West Oxfordshire Motor Auctions. Other fundraising activity included an online auction of prizes, bucket shakes in Le Touquet and donations from the teams. SpecialEffect Vice President Brendon Cross was rather surprised by the success of the Twin Town Challenge 2016, who described the £250,000 target as “quite ambitious”. That target has now been smashed, painting bright prospects for both the charity and for future editions of the Twin Town Challenge.
