Stardew Valley multiplayer detailed; to begin rollout in 2018
Chucklefish’s Tom Coxon has detailed the roadmap for Stardew Valley’s multiplayer mode, while also revealing when you can get to farming with friends.
If you wanted to get farming with friends in Stardew Valley, the bad news is that it’ll have to be next year. In a post on the official blog, developer Tom Coxon has revealed that the multiplayer element of the game will only be released in the 1.3 patch, which is scheduled for release in early 2018. This release will first land on the PC, Mac and Linux versions of the game, followed by consoles starting with the Nintendo Switch.
Coxon has also detailed how the multiplayer will work. You will have to start a game normally, after which you can have three cabins built on your farm to support your farmhands, i.e. your friends. While farmhands will be able to do almost everything a player can, certain decisions will be handled only by the main player, such as deciding when to sleep or when a festival is to start or end.
Among the planned features is an ability for player characters to marry each other, a process that will be as involved as marrying an NPC.
As for what isn’t planned: there will be no player-versus-player modes, no split-screen and no local multiplayer. These modes haven’t been completely ruled out either, but if you’re going to wait for them, you’ll have to wait a very long time.
Stardew Valley is available now on Steam (PC, Mac, Linux), PS4 and Xbox One. A version for the Nintendo Switch is expected later this year.
It doesn’t have multiplayer, but Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles is a Stardew Valley-esque game that involves farming, fishing and befriending-a-plenty. Also have a look at Torla, if you’re interested in something a little more survival-ey.
