Open world survival horror game The Forest to release on PS4 in 2018

Even if the PC version is still in Early Access after 3 and a half years, it looks like The Forest is headed to the PS4 next year. Better late than never?

Endnight Games has announced during PlayStation Experience that their long-in-development survival horror game The Forest will finally be releasing on the PS4 in 2018. The PS4 port was originally announced back in 2014, which is also when the game was released in Early Access on Steam. The game is still in Early Access and there are no indications of when the PC version will release, but a PS4 release might prompt a PC release as well.

There is no specific release date for the PS4 version yet. The developers did, however, release a new trailer showcasing the game’s co-operative multiplayer.

The Forest has you playing as the survivor of a plane crash, now stranded in a mysterious forest. The survival aspect involves struggling to meet your basic needs, crafting tools and weapons, and building protective fortifications by chopping down trees. The horror aspect involves staying alive as you are assaulted by cannibalistic mutants. It’s like Minecraft, but less terrifying.

The game has a story mode, and as the trailer above demonstrates, co-operative multiplayer. There’s also a peaceful mode in the game, which is enabled by typing in an old-school-style cheat.

It’s being developed in Vancouver, Canada by the Endnight Games. What’s particularly impressive about the game is that it’s developed by a core three-man team that makes use of contractors, but only expands to up to 10 members at any given time.

The Forest is currently available on PC in Early Access form over on Steam. Here’s the official website.

In other indie news from PlayStation Experience, hole-based game Donut County and the Mega Man-ish 20XX are both releasing on the PS4 sometime next year.
