Survive Hell by Possessing Demons in Survival Horror Game Agony
28 May, 2016
Agony is a first-person survival horror game that takes you straight to hell, where the only way out is a meeting with the enigmatic “Red Goddess”.
Think hell in video games and you’re probably thinking of Doom and its sequel. And its other sequel, the one that couldn’t decide if it was a survival horror game or an action game. Unlike Doom 3, Madmind Studio’s Agony knows what it’s going for: pure survival horror in first-person and a jaunt straight through the monstrosities and tortures of hell.
You play as a gravelly-voiced man who appears to be a video game protagonist by profession, as he finds himself struck by amnesia and trapped in hell. The only way out is forward: specifically through a certain “Red Goddess”. Getting to her will be no cakewalk, however, as hell is filled with demons and other horrid beings. Luckily for gravelly-voiced video game protagonist man, however, he has the ability to possess demons and control them. Sartre may think that hell is other people, but Agony knows that hell is all about controlling other people.

All of this is rendered in surprisingly stunning graphics thanks to Unreal Engine 4. Just because it’s hell doesn’t mean it has to look ugly: instead, Madmind Studio has crafted a hell that I’m dying to visit and run around in some. I particularly enjoy the design of the demons (such as the one pictured above). The studio consists of industry veterans who have worked on games like Tom Clancy’s The Division and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, so high standards should probably be expected.
Agony will be available at some point in 2017 on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and will be published by PlayWay. Here’s the official site, if you’d like to spend more time gazing longingly at hell like I did.
