The Swords of Ditto is an adorable co-op action RPG from Devolver Digital
06 Jun, 2017
Developer onebitbeyond and publisher Devolver Digital have announced The Swords of Ditto, a childlike action RPG with roguelike mechanics.
Roguelike games have always had a macabre edge to them, even if they treat it lightly. The Swords of Ditto, however, looks just plain adorable and has you playing as an adventurer out to beat the evil Mormo. Every adventure you will undertake will be unique to the hero you play as, and you can even grab the assistance of a local co-op partner. Should your hero fall, the impact will affect future adventures.
There’s a lot of Zelda in the game’s top-down view and exploration of dungeons and nature, but I also sense quite a bit of Ittle Dew in the game’s delicious-as-confectionary visuals. The game also takes some delightful creative liberties, such as contrasting medieval weapons like swords and bows with… vinyl records used as Frisbees and a magical golf club. Really, I think golf as a theme is undergoing a renaissance right now.
The game is also quite open-ended: you can tackle the game’s dungeons in any order you like, completing side-quests along the way. Alternately, you can even go straight for Mormo if you’re feeling up for a challenge. Of course, you probably want better gear before you do something like that, but the game doesn’t stop you at all.
A proper gameplay reveal for the game will take place on Monday, June 12 at 5:00 PM PST. The game should also appear at Devolver Digital’s first E3 press conference, which will take place on Sunday, June 11 at 10:00 PM PST.
Here’s the game’s reveal trailer, which Devolver Digital describes in the comments as ‘delightful as fuck’.
The Swords of Ditto is in development for PC and PS4, and is expected to release sometime in 2018. Steam and GOG.com store pages have gone live already, although you cannot pre-order the game at this point.
