The Blackout Club is a co-op horror title from BioShock devs; on Early Access now

 

The Blackout Club has you playing as a team of teens investigating a secret in their town, and it comes from the devs of BioShock, Neon Struct, and Prey.

Indie developer Question has announced that it’s developing a co-op horror game called The Blackout Club, and that it’s already on Early Access. It looks like a fairly unique take on both co-op and horror, so this one bears some breaking down.

In The Blackout Club, you play as a teen who has been waking up in the morning in strange places, seemingly sleepwalking. The teenagers band together to form the titular club, and to investigate these blackout incidents as well. The stakes are raised in particular when your best friend goes missing.

Interestingly, the gameplay involves outwitting your enemies using tactics and tools, while recording evidence using your smartphone. Procedural generation makes for new experiences each time you play, giving you new goals and enemies to grapple with. You will also have to contend with a mysterious foe called The Shade, which you can only see when you close your eyes. The game also features character customisation and upgrades, both cosmetic and ability-based, which are unlocked by levelling up.

The development team at Question includes folks who have worked on a number of immersive sims, including the BioShock games, Prey, Dishonored, and Thief: Deadly Shadows. Also a part of the team is David Pittman of Minor Key Games, who developed Neon Struct and Slayer Shock, the latter of which is also a game about suburban horror.
