Indie games are now on the radar of many, as developers tend to push higher levels of creativity. We declared 2025 as the year of indie games, after witnessing the glory of many good games. Those games are still talked about a lot in 2026, with Expedition 33 and Silksong being only a couple of them.
This year, while indie dominance has not been at that level, we aren’t missing it entirely. For example, the best-rated game on Steam in 2026 so far is none other than an indie game. In fact, in the top 10 best-rated games of 2026 so far, there are five indie titles.
It’s fair to say the presence of indie games is still pretty solid. On that note, it is worth noting that two different Backrooms games are currently in Xbox’s top 10 paid charts. Both games have you escaping the Backrooms, and both are indies.
Two Backrooms Games, Two Different Experiences

These are both completely different games, but share the same concept. One of the games is Escape the Backrooms, and the other is Backrooms: Escape Together.
The former is developed by Fancy Games and published by Secret Mode. It is a co-op horror game that can be played by up to 4 players. Escape the Backrooms features 30 levels, all of them handcrafted and inspired by the Backrooms lore. Each of the levels has its own puzzle, layout, and, of course, hostile entities.
This game was first released on PC only, but after a successful release, it has made its way to the Xbox Series S|X and PlayStation 5.
On the other hand, the latter game, Backrooms: Escape Together, is made by a completely different studio, Triiodide Studios, and takes a slightly different approach from the previously mentioned game. Backrooms: Escape Together features up to 6-player co-op and uses procedurally generated environments. This means that each of your runs is going to be different, allowing for high replayability.
This one also features proximity chat, tossing plenty of puzzles for you to solve. Just like the previous game, Backrooms Escape Together was also released on PC first.
Both Games Are In Xbox’s Top 10 Paid Charts
Escape the Backrooms and Backrooms: Escape Together are both currently in the Xbox top 10 paid charts. The former is currently in fifth place, just behind the likes of 007 First Light, UFC 6, and two versions of EA Sports FC 26.
On the other hand, Backrooms: Escape Together is currently at the 8th spot behind the likes of Minecraft and Grand Theft Auto V. The remaining two games in the top 10 list are Resident Evil 4 and Destiny 2.
