With Its Comeback, Konami Could Lean on Hideo Kojima More Than Ever

Kojima and Konami

Hideo Kojima, one of the most well-known figures in the gaming industry, joined Konami back in 1986. He shocked the world by creating Metal Gear. With this title, his reputation grew, and people began to recognize who Kojima was.

While still at Konami, the legendary auteur went on to create the entire Metal Gear franchise, which is still considered one of the best in gaming history. However, despite the long journey, Kojima parted ways with Konami following the release of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain.

Kojima left Konami due to creative differences over the latest mainline Metal Gear title, as the company had begun limiting his creative control. Kojima thrives on creative freedom and has a unique vision that’s incredibly rare in the industry. After his departure, Konami struggled and eventually shifted its focus to mobile and pachinko games.

However, thanks to a string of recent successful releases, the publisher is now making a comeback. It could be the right time for Konami to lean on Hideo Kojima more than ever.

Konami Is Making A Solid Comeback As A Publisher

Silent Hill 2 Remake.

After Hideo Kojima parted ways with Konami, the publisher struggled significantly. It faced heavy criticism from fans as the Metal Gear franchise was effectively stalled. The release of Metal Gear Survive, a poorly received spin-off, only added to the backlash.

Following years of criticism, Konami finally began to turn things around. Fans were shocked when the company announced a Silent Hill 2 Remake. However, the excitement quickly turned to skepticism when it was revealed that Bloober Team would be leading the project.

Silent Hill 2 is a classic horror title, and given Bloober Team’s mixed track record, fan distrust was understandable. When the gameplay reveal trailer dropped, criticism intensified, and many fans lost hope. However, over time, the developer took the feedback seriously, made improvements, and gradually began to regain some of that trust.

When the game was released, everyone was praising it and even joking about filling out Bloober Team’s apology forms. The remake restored a lot of faith in both the developer and the publisher. After that, the fandom began demanding more remakes from Konami. Recently, Bloober Team released Cronos: The New Dawn, which, although it did not attract a large player count, received positive reviews.

The recent Silent Hill game was also quite successful. Now, Konami is working on numerous future projects, including new Silent Hill games and remakes.

A Push From Kojima Would Be The Cherry On Top

I know it is extremely optimistic to think Kojima would even consider rejoining Konami after his exit. However, with the strong comeback the publisher is making, I wouldn’t be surprised if some kind of partnership happens.

Kojima is fully occupied with his own studio. He recently released Death Stranding 2, one of the highest-rated games this year. The game has received praise from many people. Kojima is also working on a few more projects, among which fans are highly anticipating Overdose (OD). So, he has his hands full at the moment, but a partnership or collaboration with Konami to work on the Metal Gear franchise would be a moment to remember.

Konami is currently focusing heavily on remakes, which is understandable. It recently released the Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake. However, a new entry in the series may not be possible without Kojima.

Konami Wants To Work With Kojima Again

Hideo Kojima.

Kojima is a legendary figure, and in my opinion, Konami made a mistake by letting him go. Even the publisher admitted that it regrets parting ways with him. During a live stream last year, Metal Gear Solid producer Noriaki Okamura said he would like nothing more than to work with Kojima again.

It has been a long time since Kojima and the original team left, so the producer also noted that it would be unfair to call on them for help now. While he would love to work with Kojima again, he later said in an interview that no one has been able to replace Kojima yet.

That said, the publisher has created a team of young people full of creative ideas. Okamura implied that the successor to the legendary auteur will come from this new team.

So, while it would be amazing to see Hideo Kojima back with Konami in any kind of collaboration, the chances remain very slim.
