World of Goo-like base-building RTS Forts to release in April

Forts, a strategy game about building forts with questionable structural stability, will be releasing in April, developers EarthWork Games have announced.

We talked about Forts when we learned about its existence back in July last year. The little wobbly-battle-fort-builder-that-could has now wobbled its way to be nearly ready for release. According to the developers, you can expect to the play the game on 19th April. It will be available only for PC via Steam. There’s a right and proper Steam page for it now, too.

Forts is a game about using a variety of materials to build bizarre forts that laugh in the face of physics. You can arm them with weaponry and then use said weapons to take down your opponent’s fort. It sounds like any old artillery game with a base-building mechanic, but it’s actually a full-fledged real-time strategy game. There’s tech trees, resource management and even a new Commander system.

The Commander system, which has been revealed very recently, will let you pick from one of nine ‘commanders’ for your fort. Each commander has a unique passive ability and a unique chargeable dynamic ability. One of the Russian commanders has the ability to open and close doors twice as fast. Three commanders have been shown off so far, and you can have a look at them over at the official site.

Forts may be a scrappy indie title, but two of its three developers have worked at The Creative Assembly, the studio responsible for the Total War games. This includes Jeff Van Dyck, composer of Rome: Total War and Total War: Shogun 2.

EarthWork Games has also put together a new trailer for the announcement of the game’s launch. It does not have a dramatic baritone in it, but it does have lots of explosions, which I can confirm is a suitable substitute. Have a look below.
