Graceful hand-illustrated puzzler Gorogoa gets a new reveal trailer

Annapurna Interactive has put together a new trailer for the gorgeous and elegant visual puzzle game Gorogoa. Have a gander at its inventive puzzles.

You can keep your Battlefields and your Uncharteds, but give me a good ol’ hand-drawn video game any day. And while hand-drawn art has seen a revival across the indiesphere, some titles still manage to surprise and excite in a way that makes me feel like I’m perusing an old storybook. Gorogoa is what I’m talking about. This understated yet ambitious looking game has you manipulating frames of art to… well, it’s a very visual game, so it’s best if you watch the trailer to find out.

Gorogoa is impressive not only artistic, but also from a design standpoint. The level of interactivity and the combinations that the paintings offer look properly astounding. No story has been detailed as of yet, but it looks like much in the vein of say, Amanita Design’s Samorost series, we’ll have to piece together a narrative using the game’s lush illustrations.

The game has been in the works for quite a few years now, serving as an Indiecade finalist in 2012. Gorogoa is being designed, developed and hand-illustrated by the talented Jason Roberts, who is working with publisher Annapurna Interactive to get the game out in Spring 2017. So far, the game has been confirmed for PC, Mac, iOS and Android. Here it is on Steam, and here’s what the official website looks like.

If you think the name Annapurna Interactive is familiar, it might be because you’ve heard of Annapurna Pictures: the company behind Zero Dark Thirty, Her, 20th Century Women and Sausage Party. Annapurna Interactive is their recently-formed video games division, which is handling publishing duties for both Gorogoa and What Remains of Edith Finch, from Giant Sparrow.
