Gray Zone blends strategy, RPG, and shoot-em-up with a sci-fi narrative

Gray Zone releases early next year on Early Access, and it’s bringing with it a unique hybrid of genres set against a spacefaring backdrop.

Just before the year (and the decade) ends, Slovakian developer EastWorks has announced a game it’s been working on for two years now. It’s a sci-fi space adventure set in the far future, and its gameplay is a very intriguing blend of genres. Gray Zone will release sometime in the first quarter of 2020, in Early Access form.

Here’s how the devs describe the gameplay:

In Gray Zone you command your heroes and other friendly units to avoid or defeat the enemy, to complete story objectives, mandatory or optional. You build fire teams, use machines, vehicles and weapons, collect and distribute items. Your goal is to choose the right combat strategy to minimize your losses whilst achieving a result. The game allows you to freeze time in “tactic mode”, which gives you unlimited time to re-think your strategy and issue different orders to multiple units at one moment.

A word of warning: the developers estimate that the game may take as long as Q4 2023 to actually finish development, given their vision and current pace. This is because the game is divided into 25 chapters spread out over four chapters, and the team is currently operating at a pace of one chapter per calendar year.

Of course, with Early Access, there’s the possibility for a larger team and more resources to help speed up production. Still, if you’re interested in playing this game anytime soon, you’d better expect it to be in Early Access only.
