Ninja Theory’s next title, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, will launch in August

Ninja Theory has finally dated the release of their upcoming indie project, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. You can also pre-order the game right away.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice will release on August 8th, Ninja Theory has announced. The game is also up for pre-order now (store links below), and those pre-ordering will get a special digital comic short at launch and for free. The comic, titled Hellblade: Senua’s Song, is written by the game’s creator director, Tameem Antoniades and features art by Ben Templesmith.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is Ninja Theory’s venture into independent development, after having previously developed Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and DmC: Devil May Cry. Although the game is indie enough to be featured here, Ninja Theory actually prefers to say that they are trying to resurrect the space between AAA games and indie games. Their effort shows: Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice has very strong production values that could rival most AAA games out there. Nevertheless, the British studio states that the game will not be as big as a AAA game and will, as a result, be priced at a mere $29.99 / €29.99 / £24.99.

The game itself is an adventure that has you controlling Senua, a Celtic warrior suffering from psychosis who journeys on a ‘vision quest into Viking Hell’. Ninja Theory isn’t taking Senua’s psychosis lightly, as they’ve collaborated with actual neuroscientists and people suffering from psychosis. Interestingly, the game’s trailers don’t seem to depict any combat and are entirely narratively-focused.

Here’s the game’s latest trailer, which does not paint a pretty picture of what’s to come. Well, metaphorically speaking. Graphically, the game looks incredibly pretty.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice will be out on PC (Steam, Humble Store and GOG.com), as well as PS4 (US, EU). The game is available for pre-order on all of these stores.
