Indie Game Releases of the Week: 24th February to 1st March 2020
23 Feb, 2020
This week in indie games, we have the quirky adventure The Unholy Society, adaptable action game Bloodroots, and lots more.
Oh boy, where do we even begin with this week? There’s so many original indie games coming out in the last week of February that we’re adding a new section to this feature. Head on below the featured indie games to find our honourable-mention games that we think you should check out! And below that, there’s a ton of indie releases, many of which are ports.
Broken Lines (25th February on PC, Linux, Switch)
Broken Lines is a tactical RPG set in World War II. You play as a group of eight soldiers who have landed behind enemy lines and who must work together to fight off the enemy and make it home alive. The game has a heavy story focus, and you’ll even be making crucial choices as you struggle to survive. Find out more in our preview of the game here.
The Unholy Society (25th February on PC, Switch)
The Unholy Society is an offbeat adventure game inspired by pop culture of the 80s and 90s. You play as the exorcist Bonaventura Horowitz as he sets off to save the world from the combined forces of gods, demons, and monsters. What follows is a smorgasbord of the magic and supernatural, underscored by retro style.
Hayfever (25th February on PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch)
Hayfever is a retro-style platformer about an allergic mailman who’s out to retrieve all of the letters he has lost. His allergies might be considered a weakness, but the game plays it up as a strength. He can propel himself thanks to regular pollen, or swell up due to smog. Achoo!
Beautiful Desolation (26th February on PC)
Beautiful Desolation is the next game from South African sibling duo The Brotherhood, who previously created Stasis and Cayne. In this isometric adventure, you explore a post-apocalyptic future and attempt to make sense of it all while making friends and enemies. It’s got a uniquely tribal-punk style, and of course, gorgeous isometric graphics that are a trademark of the developers.
Bloodroots (28th February on PC, PS4, Switch)
Bloodroots is a hectic, weird west-themed action game in which everything can be a weapon, even if it’s a simple carrot. You play as Mr. Wolf (who appropriately wears a wolf on his head) as he searches for the one who left him for dead. The game’s smooth action is all about performing the most creative and spectacular combos, and if you do really well, you can even earn a spot on the leaderboards.
Honourable Mentions
- Edgar – Bokbok in Boulzac (26th February on PC, Xbox One, Switch)
- This satirical point-and-click adventure has you playing as a crackpot outcast who’s out to uncover a deadly secret behind the city of Boulzac. Also, you have a rooster companion.
- Heaven Dust (27th February on PC, Switch)
- Heaven Dust is a survival horror game determined to spook you despite its cute aesthetic. You must explore a secret facility and uncover a Resident Evil-style secret. That is… if you can survive long enough.
- Iris and the Giant (27th February on PC, Mac, Linux)
- Iris and the Giant is a striking-looking game that combines collectible card games, RPGs, and roguelike elements. Apart from collecting cards and fighting tactical battles, you will experience a poetic, psychological story about facing your inner demons.
- Served! (27th February on PC, Mac, Linux, Switch)
- Served! is a top-down multiplayer racing game in which you play as waiters? This one’s best enjoyed with a couch and friends.
- BE-A Walker (28th February on Switch)
- BE-A Walker has you controlling a giant mech sent out to destroy the natives of a planet undergoing colonization. However, you might change your mind and choose to side with the natives instead. You have to move each leg manually to trample up your opposition.
