Banner Saga 3 announced via Kickstarter, to conclude the series

Stoic returns to where it all started: Kickstarter, to fund the finale of the Banner Saga series, Banner Saga 3. More tactical Vikings to follow.

Is it really nearly 5 years since the original Banner Saga was opened to crowdfunding on Kickstarter? Apparently it is, and that makes me feel really old. At the same time, it pleases me how industrious developer Stoic has been: they not only released the game in less than two years, they announced a sequel and released it in April last year. Now, they’re out to finish the trilogy with Banner Saga 3, which has an estimated December 2018 release window. I wouldn’t put much stock in Kickstarter delivery dates, of course, but there’s no doubting Stoic’s ability to deliver.

So then, what to expect from the game? Apart from more of the same (and what wonderful same it is), here’s what to expect narratively:

Banner Saga 3 concludes the tale. Steel your nerves, step forth into the approaching abyss. Cross the threshold from daylight without end into untold darkness. Warped lands within threaten your sanity, and a writhing wyrm tests your mettle. But here, in the darkness, is where secrets are brought to light and motives are made clear. Are your friends who they claim to be? They all look to you. What story will your banner tell?

Stoic wants $200,000 to finish the project, and based on the momentum the Kickstarter has the moment, it seems they will hit that target and more. There’s a variety of tiers available, and you can get both previous Banner Saga games by adding $20 to whatever pledge you choose. Banner Saga 3 is currently set to be developed for PC and Mac, with additional platforms likely to be considered later down the line.
