Duelling game and wurm dinner simulator Nidhogg 2 to release in August

Flaunting its brand new art style, Nidhogg 2 is set to release next month on PC, Mac and PS4. Here’s why the devs went with the interesting art style.

Developer Messhof has announced that the sequel to its popular and bizarre duelling game is finally almost done. Nidhogg 2 is headed to PS4, PC and Mac on 15th August.

The game retains the original’s core of duelling across platformer stages in order to win the privilege of being eaten by the titular wurm, but it also brings with it a range of changes. These include new weapons, full character customisation, and of course, the completely new aesthetic that turns the tables on the original Nidhogg’s pixel art minimalism.

So what is it with the new look? Messhof took to the PlayStation Blog to explain just that. In it, the developer talks about how the art style for the original Nidhogg came to be, how the development process for Nidhogg 2 is different than the original game, and how that allowed them to go a little freaky with things.

As for music, which was a very important part of the first Nidhogg, the sequel will bring back artist Daedalus. Joining him will be Mux Mool, Baths, Doseone and Osborne.

Messhof also showed off the game on a nearly 19-minute long gameplay video at PlayStation Underground. Here’s how the game plays.

The original Nidhogg is available on Steam (PC, Mac) as well as PS4 and PS Vita. As for Nidhogg 2, pre-orders for the PS4 version will be available starting 18th July. There is also a Steam page up, but there’s no pre-order available on it yet.

Know what’s another game with a distinctive art style (but not coming to PS4)? Cuphead. If you prefer your sword antics to be first-person, have a look at City of Brass.
