Return of the Obra Dinn set to release today on PC and Mac

Return of the Obra Dinn marks the return of Lucas Pope, developer of the modern indie classic Papers, Please. Prepare to assess damages later today.

Boy, has it really been over 5 years since Papers, Please came out? Lucas Pope made his mark on the indie scene with the totalitarian bureaucracy simulator back in 2013, but his next game is a radically different venture. In Return of the Obra Dinn, you’ll find yourself playing an insurance investigator on board an abandoned ship, looking to assess damages and figure out exactly what caused the ship to be abandoned.

Return of the Obra Dinn will be out in a matter of minutes from the publishing of this post. The game will, on its initial release, be only available on PC and Mac.

Apart from the unceremonious release, Pope has not released a fancy launch trailer either. Have a look at the trailer from last month, which is when we learnt that game is indeed coming out this year.

Here’s the game’s plot, as described by the dev:

In 1802, the merchant ship Obra Dinn set out from London for the Orient with over 200 tons of trade goods. Six months later it hadn’t met its rendezvous point at the Cape of Good Hope and was declared lost at sea.

Early this morning of October 14th, 1807, the Obra Dinn drifted into port at Falmouth with damaged sails and no visible crew. As insurance investigator for the East India Company’s London Office, dispatch immediately to Falmouth, find means to board the ship, and prepare an assessment of damages.

Return of the Obra Dinn is a first-person mystery adventure based on exploration and logical deduction.
