Getting the perfect gaming experience is like the holy grail for all gamers. Something you strive for, dream of, and hope to one day reach.
The ideal seat, the perfect controller or mouse, the best screen, the mini fridge, the figurines and the computer or console of your choice. These are just some of the considerations for the gamer on the hunt for the perfect setup.
What’s important about an individual’s setup is that it is unique to that person. What one player may love, another may loathe. The ideal setup depends on the type of games that a person likes to play, when they play and where they play.
That got us thinking, could a gaming projector be part of the perfect setup? Is that something that would take an experience to the next level? But what we specifically wanted to know is ‘are projectors a good option for playing indie games?’
The good folks at BenQ kindly let us get hands on with one of their latest projectors, the X300G 4K HDR 3LED Portable Console Gaming Projector, to test for ourselves whether gaming with a projector is a viable option.

Testing
We really enjoyed playing games on the device, it was a totally unique experience. Playing at night was the ideal with picture quality fading in the brighter daylight. We found the indie games we played were not impacted by any lag whatsoever and it was great to see games blown up on the wall.
We thought the device was aesthetically pleasing, though we did have to put it in the middle of the room to get the perfect positioning. In a small room the picture looked fantastic, if we bought the device we would mount it to the ceiling, it would have the wow factor and also save on space.
Key questions
- Does it work in daylight? Yes, but the natural light does diminish the definition and quality of the picture.
- Is it expensive? Yes, at around £1,500 the projector is quite a spend commitment.
- What’s the lag like? According to BenQ’s own data, streaming is comparable to most monitors. It worked perfectly for the indie games we tried.
- Will it work in my small room? Yes, but you’ll need to get distances right to get the perfect picture.
- Does it save space? Yes, it’ll mean you don’t need a large television, but you will need to find space for the unit and mount it for best results..
Pros
- It looks cool, right out the box. On a shelf or on the ceiling it’s going to look good.
- Audio output, it’s awesome, totally amps up gameplay, giving cinema vibes.
- You can go big, you can go huge. The picture can fill a wall and that’s impressive.
- Unique gaming experience, nothing quite like turning a room into a gaming hub.
- It’s impressive, if someone came in and saw you gaming on the wall, they are going to say ‘that’s cool’.
Cons
- Doesn’t come with any wires except the power cable. You’ll need your own cables for better connections.
- Keep in mind you’ll have wires to hide once setup, it can’t just sit in the middle of a room.
- Some loss in depth of detail of the picture when blown up.
- Some loss of picture quality in bright light.

Key Features
- HDR tone mapping and SSI Dynamic Black technology
- 3LED high brightness, vibrant hues, and 84% of the DCI-P3 color space
- Ultra-low 4.16ms input lag
- Spatial Audio for Precision Gaming
- 100” picture with 1.2x optical motorized zoom
- Game modes
- All major console inputs
- Access to online media hub
Conclusion
The projector would be ideal for someone looking to save space, with a bit of budget and who wants to enhance their gaming experience.
It’s not going to be for everyone, but for the indie gamer we think this could be a great option. If you are playing competitive gaming where you want everything to be optimal, this may not be for you.
But if you are looking to change your apartment or bedroom into a unique and immersive gaming environment, then a good option could be the BenQ X300G 4K HDR 3LED Portable Console Gaming Projector.
We really enjoyed our gaming experience and would certainly recommend the device to the right player.
