Lost Twins 2 Review

Lost Twins 2 review

A chilly, frozen castle; a particularly enchanting forest; a world of toys – these are the environments that twins Abi and Ben find themselves getting lost in. Is it all a figment of their imagination, or have they really been spirited away from their rooms to these places, where they must learn to work together and reunite, again and again and again?

Lost Twins 2 review

After a brief intro, Lost Twins 2 pushes story off the table like some kind of unbothered cat, and leaves you with 33 puzzles to solve – 11 for each zone of the game, which you unlock progressively. The twins never speak, never let on what they think of being lost in these strange landscapes, and never question their predicament.

It’s a bit disappointing to not be able to delve further into Abi and Ben’s actual narrative, but at the same time, I register that that’s not the point of the game.

So then, directly to the puzzle-solving. Lost Twins 2 has your puzzle platforming staples – running, jumping, climbing ropes, pushing boxes, and pressing buttons, but it adds a special piece-shuffling mechanic that makes the game stand out.

Each of the game’s puzzles has 3 areas that can be shuffled up, down, left, or right, like a tile puzzle. This is critical to opening colored portals along the walls or floors, allowing Abi and Ben to traverse the areas in impossible ways.

Developer Playdew has put in a single-minded focus on making the most of this mechanic, and almost every puzzle, after the initial tutorial levels, was a satisfying challenge to figure out and resolve. I found myself frequently staring at the game’s blueprint mode, mentally drawing paths and trying to figure out how to get the twins to their goal – a stone ring guarded by a phoenix.

Although the game’s goal is really simple (and its puzzles delightfully complex), there’s two additional layers of challenge, should you wish to get the most of the game.

Each level has 3 feathers placed in strategic locations, which serve as collectibles and also unlock concept art. More interestingly, however, almost every level has a (out-of-game) achievement associated with it, which you can acquire by performing a particular action in the game or completing the level in a certain way.

These achievement challenges sound simple enough – grab all feathers as Abi, for example, or drive a toy car as Ben. In practice, you soon realize that the levels are built to make these achievements hard to obtain, making them a true test of your wits. The achievements were so important to my enjoyment of the game that I’m a little disappointed they weren’t integrated into the game itself, so that they’d be easier to spot and track.

Lost Twins 2 already doesn’t have much to say in its narrative (if it can be considered one), but its environment design also doesn’t betray much. The music is calm and melodious, not getting in the way of your thinking and puzzle-solving. It’s serviceable, but also pleasing to the senses and a clear indication that Playdew knows what its doing when it makes a puzzle game.

A final note: Lost Twins 2 can be played in both co-op and singleplayer mode. I played the game in singleplayer mode and a fun time. In fact, the game lends itself so well to solitary thinking that I find its co-op gameplay tough to imagine. Still – that option is there, and that’s all good.

Being a stock-standard, challenging puzzle game is Lost Twins 2’s greatest strength and weakness combined. Come for the puzzles, stay for the puzzles, and don’t expect much else. If you do expect puzzle platformers, though, Lost Twins 2 holds its own against the best in its genre.
