Luna Abyss Review – Dive Into The Abyss

A detailed review of Luna Abyss.

Luna Abyss is an amazing bullet-hell action adventure game that manages to pair up the combat with fluid traversal, and I had a blast playing through this title for my review. Traverse the abyss and take on a wide variety of enemies with your arsenal of weapons and abilities in this short but fun adventure.

Striving For Freedom

Luna Abyss tells a prisoner’s tale as they try to achieve freedom by exploring the vast, unknown abyss. A sentence so crushing that it makes freedom unattainable for Fawkes as they try to follow every one of Aylin’s commands to shorten the sentence. However, the ending hides a twist that one really does not expect throughout.

The story of this game, while it is not the highlight, manages to keep the player engaged until the very end. However, a lot of the NPC dialogue can sometimes feel a little overwhelming, especially when it is used in between tense combat sections. You will definitely enjoy the tale told in Luna Abyss, but it is not something that will make you stick around; that is the gameplay.

Variety In Gameplay

I’m going to write in detail about this section because it is deserving of that. Luna Abyss shines through its fast-paced first-person bullet hell action, which includes four different types of weapons throughout your journey. Every new weapon introduced in the game is not just a useless addition to your arsenal.

The developers made sure to keep introducing new enemies as well, which forces players into using the new weapons. I really liked this mechanic since it forced me to keep switching between my shots and allowed me to learn play styles that I wouldn’t have imagined doing otherwise.

Once you unlock all four weapons and start switching between them on the fly, you’ll enjoy Luna Abyss much more. In fact, that is the intended way, since the game continuously hits you with waves of enemies that require you to depend on your other weapons.

As great as the enemy variety is, I cannot say the same about the boss fights. There are four main boss encounters aside from the elites. All of these bosses rely on the same gimmick, and even if it isn’t the exact same thing, the encounters still don’t feel unique.

Sure, you’re dodging waves of attacks and shooting the boss with your arsenal. But it always comes down to either destroying shields, or siwthces, or grunts that bosses spawn in between phases to finish the job. This gets really repetitive by the end of the game, and I just wish a few more gimmicks had been implemented in these encounters to make them feel unique.

Smooth Operation And Exploration

Another department where Luna Abyss deserves a perfect score is its traversal and just the basic movement. Initially, it is not that great, but as you start unlocking the different abilities, the traversal becomes just as fun as the gameplay, and moving around never feels like a chore.

Dashing around, making double jumps, teleporting, you name a method of getting around, and this game offers. It’s all so seamless, too, and the game continuously challenges you with platforming sections in between the action sequences, which adds even more variety to the gameplay.

Even though there is not a lot of exploration, the game still rewards you for going out of your way to explore its beautiful environments. You can learn more about the story, find additional abilities, and receive upgrades for your health if you decide to explore.

Optimized Bullet-Hell

Luna Abyss review.

Luna Abyss runs extremely well, and I experienced almost no frame-rate drops even when the screen was filled with multiple enemies and waves of colorful orbs. For how fast-paced the gameplay is, any performance issue would have been detrimental to the final outcome. Thankfully, the developers made sure that Luna Abyss runs beautifully and smoothly if your system supports the minimum requirements.

Verdict

Luna Abyss offers a comparatively short but richly packed experience that will make you come back for more play-throughs. If you’re looking for some great action combat with different weapons, all mixed in with smooth traversal, then I can easily recommend this game to you.
