Restaurats – Review

Restaurats

Restaurats is a restaurant management game developed by toR Studio and published by Polden Publishing. In Restaurats, you play as a rat whose job is to prepare and serve dishes to the customers to make sure they’re satisfied, while also ensuring that imps or other obstacles don’t ruin the customer experience.

While the game can be played solo, it is most enjoyable in the co-op mode, where you can play with your friends to bring prosperity to your restaurant.

Before we head into the review, if you’re looking for more information about Restaurats, you can check out their official Steam page here.

Story And Setting

Restaurats takes you on an interesting journey where you have to manage a restaurant and restore it to its former glory. Your customers are all unique races, such as skeletons and goblins. Each race has unique preferences, and not all of them get along well with each other.

The cozy fantasy setting works well with the gameplay, and it all ties really well with the other aspects of the game. For example, you’d expect vampires not to be very social, and that’s just how they are in the game.

While there isn’t a solid story for the game in any of the game modes, the setting feels great for what the game offers to the players, and that is a very fun restaurant-management experience.

Gameplay And Mechanics

There are two main game modes here. The Career mode and the Friendslop mode. In Friendslop game mode, you only have to survive for 21 days without leaving any unsatisfied customers or running into debt. Each run is a little different with randomized improvements, which gives you access to new dishes, furniture, and expansions.

On the other hand, the Career mode focuses on reputation, which can be earned by successfully serving customers. Reputation unlocks new improvements and customers. Improvements are still randomized in the Career mode, but the reputation-based gameplay stops you from progressing too fast, which is a great way to keep things balanced as the game progresses.

Cooking and packaging feel like they could’ve been a little better. You simply have to throw all the ingredients on the packaging table, pack it up, and throw it in the oven if the recipe requires it, or just take it directly to the customer if it’s ready.

A little more detail in the cooking process would make it a lot more engaging, especially in the Friendslop mode, where things are much faster-paced and you can also order processed ingredients. It just becomes a matter of how fast you can throw the ingredients together.

The throwing mechanic is fun. You can simply throw all the dishes from the kitchen to the customers without having to walk to each one and then serve your dish. Furthermore, once the service is done, you can just throw the dirty plates back in the kitchen and wash them there. It definitely makes the game a lot more fun.

Sounds And Visuals

In terms of sounds, the game does just fine. It is not bad, and it is not extraordinary. However, the visuals and the character design for customers are extremely creative. The game also gives you a lot of customization options for your own rat, and you can get a super goofy look out of it.

Furthermore, there are also VIPs of each race, and you can take one look at them and tell them apart that this customer is a VIP Goblin or a VIP Orc. These characters are huge and look like they’re much wealthier than the regular customers.

Other than that, the dishes also look fairly tasty, and the overall restaurant gives a fantasy tavern vibe with all the different races sitting together.

Verdict

Restaurats might appear to be just another restaurant simulator, but it is extremely enjoyable, especially with friends. The thing that sets this game apart is that it doesn’t try to be serious. It’s a fun game, and you’ll find that fun in every task. You can keep playing the career mode to keep expanding your restaurant, or you can do the Friendslop run with your squad, and you’ll have the time of your lives.

I’ll definitely recommend this game for anyone who’s looking for a fun co-op game to play. Not only that, this game is also ideal for someone looking for a cozy restaurant-management experience.
