The Survival genre is often harsh, but Winter Burrow attempts to take a more cozier take at it. The little mouse faces many challenges, but at the game’s core, you will find warmth in its plot and other gameplay features. The story doesn’t start exactly in a happy way; the mouse first lost its parents and now has to fend for itself. There are many needs you need to take care of, but you also need to help out other characters in the game.
In our Winter Burrow review, we dive deep into the mechanics and how well it handles the cozy and survival elements together. To learn more about the game check out the Steam page.

The game does a good job of explaining all the basics to you, but it does so in a way that won’t feel too restrictive. You are free to go out and explore and check out the terrain. You gather resources to craft basic tools, and you can then familiarize yourself with them. Winter Burrow tests your creativity a little by not explaining where exactly you can use these tools in too much detail. You will need to recognize the branches of several trees, breakable mushrooms, plants, and rocks.
You won’t only deal with one axe throughout the entire game; as you progress to a new act, you will now have a whole set of better tools. Other than an axe, you will have a pickaxe and a shovel, which are each used for various purposes. There isn’t much complexity here, as you only need to get used to using these three tools. Gathering some early game resources can get a little repetitive, but the game slowly introduces more resources that you will need to craft advanced gear and items.

Using these tools to break obstructions in your way will open more areas to explore. They all grow larger over time, which is great for immersion, but you slowly start wishing the game had a mini-map, which would make it much easier. There were times where we had to retrace our steps a lot, and that would lead to the mouse getting very cold. This does increase the challenge aspect, but it was slightly more tedious than fun.
The game got its charm from its more cosier elements, such as cooking and farming. Once you repair your stove, you will have access to a wide variety of recipes in different categories of dishes. Similarly, once you unlock the basement, you can grow mushrooms, which you can feed to the mouse. You were barely able to do that with the meagre berries you obtained through foraging at the start of the game. There is also another incentive to cooking: the food you eat will give you status effects, which will make exploration easier.

The plot of the game may start bittersweet, but the little mouse grows through challenges. There are several characters you will meet in the game, and you need to complete their questlines to see their full story. You can expect several tragic and, at times, wholesome moments, which are highlighted even more through art illustrations. Progressing through them will also keep you centred on a task, so you don’t end up distracted every time you unlock a new area.
It plays like any other cozy game where you gather resources with survival elements added into it. The plot has its moments where it really shows how harsh this weather can get for little rodents. However, you will also find warmth and important lessons as you progress. You can craft furniture to design your own cozy little home inside the Burrow. The game is long enough to keep you engaged, and is best enjoyed in short bursts due to its grindy nature.

Overall, Winter Burrow is a highly recommended game if you love survival games but wish they were cozier. If you love such games to have an emotional story, then you should not miss out on this title.
