Rise of the Slime is a squishy, card-based game that’s now in Early Access

Rise of the Slime is a deck-building game starring a blob of slime that becomes king. You can play it now while it’s in development.

You may have bonked many a slime in your Japanese RPGs (cough cough Dragon Quest cough), but here’s a game that actually lets you play as one of the slippery little things. In Rise of the Slime, you get to play as a squishy blue slime as it escapes from the clutches of an ancient Titan, and then rises up to become a king. To be fair, it could escape from anyone’s clutches, I wager.

Rise of the Slime plays as a turn-based card-based combat game in the roguelike fashion, so you’ll have to build a hefty deck and hope it takes you through. The game has a fixed map for its main story, but you can also enter a shifting labyrinth “via a portal leading to weird and wonderful horizons”.

Rise of the Slime is being developed by Latvian studio Bunkovsky Games, and it’s being published by Playstack. While the core of the game already seems to be in place, the finished version will have more cards and places to go. The game’s price will increase, too, so if you’re interested, now is a good time to get in on it.

The developers expect the game to be out in the first quarter of 2020, so if all goes well, you probably won’t have to wait for too long to get your hands on the slime. Just, good luck holding it.
