Dead Take Walkthrough

Dead Take walkthrough

Welcome to the Into Indie Games walkthrough for Dead Take.

Dead Take is a first-person horror adventure game in which you must search for your missing friend in a mysterious Hollywood mansion. You’ll have to overcome puzzles, explore new parts of the mansion, and splice found videos to go deeper into the game’s psychological horror mystery.

This Dead Take walkthrough covers the main story path of the game. There are a lot of story-related documents, notes, and items available in the game, so we recommend exploring the mansion thoroughly and using this walkthrough of Dead Take when you’re stuck on any of the puzzles.

For more information on Dead Take beyond this walkthrough, check out the Steam page here.

Getting In

As the game starts, go ahead and interact with the phone. Then, interact with the medicine cabinet and the bottle inside it. Finally, open the door to complete the intro.

Dead Take walkthrough

Start by going to the security office to the left of the main gate. Inside, open the white cabinet on the wall and pull out the blue key fob.

Now approach the computer and interact with the key fob reader to place your key fob on it.

The clue to the frequency we need to set it the fob to can be found in the rightmost drawer of the computer desk.

There is a flyer that includes the address of the party near the gate, outside the security office.

The frequency you need to set the fob to is 51.320. Press the upload button once you’re done and pick up the key fob.

Head to the main and interact with the key reader on the left. Interact with the black rectangle and use your key fob on it to open the gates.

Head on inside the house.

Finding the Cinema Theater

There’s a lot to explore once you’re in, but we’ll focus on the main path.

Open the doors to the main area and proceed forward to the blinking red light. Go down the stairs and towards the next blinking light.

Here, you’ll find a keypad and a note next to it. As per the note, the keycode you need is the date on the caricature of Mrs Cain. Nearby, you’ll find a plaque that says that the caricature was relocated to the coat check room.

Return to the entrance of the mansion and enter the coat check room, which has a hanger next to the door. The caricature can be found sitting under an empty area. Interact with it and then rotate it to the back to find the code.

Dead Take walkthrough

Return to the theater door and enter the code 1989.

Fixing the Projector

Inside the theater, head through the other open door and enter the next room, which is the Projector Room.

Dead Take walkthrough

Here, if you examine the projector and its surrounding items, you’ll learn that the projector is broken, but that its replacement part was already ordered and is in the garage storeroom.

Before doing anything, open the toolbox on the floor near the projector. Pick up the screwdriver.

Dead Take walkthrough

Now exit the theater and go back up the stairs to the living area. Here, approach the blocked double-doors and take a left from there, heading straight for the tall windows at the end.

You’ll find yourself in the art gallery now. Head to the window corner of the art gallery to find a broken robot vacuum cleaner.

Pick it up and rotate it so you can see the bottom. Interact with either of the screws on the backplate and use your screwdriver. Do the same for the second screw.

Then, interact with the white notch to pull out the back plate. Inside, you’ll find the storeroom key.

Dead Take walkthrough

Now return to the mansion entrance and look right to find the garage door. It has a car symbol next to it.

Inside, head down the stairs and interact with the storeroom door at the very end of the garage.

Inside, go to the far end of the room and open the grey cabinet. Pick up the IIP Part Box inside.

While you have it in your hands, rotate it and and pull the box off, then interact with the Integrated Image Processor inside.

Now return to the Projector Room in the theater and interact with the panel of the projector that has the ‘Projector Maintenance’ poster on it.

Use your screwdriver to get rid of the screws on top and then interact with the image processor to replace it with the new part you have.

Dead Take walkthrough

Now as the nearby computer says, you need to resync the Media Center. Go to the theater and interact with the director’s chair.

Once seated, press the play button and view the video that’s loaded by default.

Dead Take walkthrough

After the video ends, open the theater door that’s being knocked on. Approach the crib and pick up the Shield Key.

Dead Take walkthrough

The Shield Room – Lullaby Puzzle

Now return to the art gallery and go past the elevator to find the Shield Room. Use the Shield Key you found on it and enter.

Inside, approach the jack-in-the-box at the foot of the bed. Interact with it several times to find a cassette case inside. Pick up the case.

Rotate the case to the back and interact with it to open the case. Inside is a sheet of music. Pick it up.

Head back to the living area and go up the stairs, then straight ahead to find a piano.

Interact with the piano and open it up, then interact with the sheet holder and use your music sheet on it.

Now press the keys shown through the holes in the music sheet, on the piano. The order you need to go in is left to right, and then top to bottom.

The keys you need can be found roughly in the middle of the screen.

Dead Take walkthrough

On pressing the right keys, you’ll acquire a cassette tape. Return to the Shield Room and go left to find the cassette player.

Press the Eject button and put in the cassette you found. Press play and then interact with the baby monitor on the right. The image, when it comes into focus, reveals a code.

Now go to the closet to the right of the bed and open it. Enter the code you found on the keypad.

The code is 2429. Interact with the safe lock and inside the safe, you’ll find a media flash drive and the courtyard key.

Before moving on to the courtyard, let’s check out the contents of the flash drive.

Return to the projector room and interact with the flash drive reader to use your flash drive.

View the video if you like (after loading it, remember to go to the director’s chair to play it).

Then, head to the living area and approach the courtyard door near to the windows overlooking the courtyard. Then, head to the spa, which is a building separate from the main mansion.

Spa

The spa has a contained set of puzzles, so don’t worry about going out. Our main goal is to reassemble the trident that’s the centerpiece of the spa.

Dead Take walkthrough

Sauna

Begin by going past the jacuzzi on the left and entering the sauna (the open door). Open the panel to the right of the door by using your screwdriver on the screws.

Inside, switch the power on. Read the instructions to on the inside of the power panel to learn more about how to operate the sauna, if you wish. Another note will tell you what Duke’s preference for the sauna temperature is.

When you’re ready, close the sauna door and use the wooden ladle to pour water on the heat stones. Then, close all three vents.

Wait for the temperature to rise as high as possible and then open the medium-size vent, to the right of the heat stones.

When the temperature reaches Duke’s preference, pick up the left tine of the trident from above the heat stones.

Now exit the sauna, we’re done there.

Laconium

From the sauna, approach the swimming pool and walk to the left of the pool. You’ll find a door here that leads to the laconium.

Dead Take walkthrough

Interact with the laconium table here and arrange the disk and rings to form the image of a Greek orgy. Work your way from the outside to the inside.

Once the image is assembled right, it will open up to provide you with the right tine of the trident.

Steam Room

There’s a closed door near the sauna room: open it to find yourself in the Steam Room.

Inside, you’ll find a mechanism with four slots for weapons, as well as a riddle above for where to place them.

Return to the main spa area to find the weapons.

  • Whip: Found hanging from a hook near the jacuzzi.
  • Dagger: Found inserted into the left foot of the Poseidon statue.
  • Sickle: Found near the back of the pool area, embedded in a plant pot.
  • Sword: Found at the bottom of the pool, next to a light and resembling a Dark Souls bonfire.

Now return to the Steam Room and insert the weapons as given below:

  • Up: Sword
  • Left: Sickle
  • Right: Dagger
  • Down: Whip

Now pick up the middle tine of the trident.

You’ll now find yourself in a spooky maze. To solve it, first orient yourself with the snake mechanism to the right. Then, go straight, right, and turn left twice to find a inconspicuous opening.

After that corridor, turn left twice to see the light for the exit of the maze. Finding the path to the exit is trivial once you know where the exit is, just follow the wall.

Spa – Conclusion

Once you’re back in the main area of the spa, approach the statue of Poseidon and place the three tines on the trident. The left tine goes on top and the right tine goes at the bottom.

Go down the newly raised staircase and enter through the door to find yourself in underground one-way mirror room.

Pick up the flash drive on the seat to conclude our business at the Spa.

The First Splice

Now head back to the projector room. Insert the flash drive in the flash drive reader to gain a new video for your collection.

Then, head out of the cinema and take a right through the open door (next to the poster of Hoarfrost) to return to the one-way mirror room, this time on the other side of the mirror.

Pick up the hanging flash drive and return to the projector room to insert it in the reader and gain a new video.

After obtaining this video, you can now use Splaice to generate new videos from two videos. The two videos have to be compatible with each other though – as the notes near the computer say, there should ideally be a ‘contrast’ between the two videos.

Click on the Splaice tab on the computer. Splice the videos ‘BLUE_MOON’ and ‘MOMENT_IN_THE_SUN’, to get ‘STAR_POWER’.

Go back to the Cinema tab and load the new video. Then, go back to the cinema and sit on the comfy director’s chair to watch the video.

After the video ends, you’ll hear a familiar knocking. Exit the cinema.

Approach the painting and pick up the Painting Key.

Dead Take walkthrough

Now return to the art gallery and go up the stairs to find a pedestal with roses on it. Insert the Painting Key into the pedestal.

This opens up four paintings downstairs. Go down there and have a look at each of them.

Dead Take walkthrough

You can change the background of each painting separately, and you need to create a chronology of events for the four paintings. This means the first event should have dawn as the background, then noon, then evening, and the final event should have night.

The solution to this puzzle is:

  • The Dreamer: Dawn
  • The Rising Star: Noon
  • Price and Illusion: Evening
  • The Final Curtain: Night

Once you’ve set all four paintings properly, a new door will open with an ominous red light coming from it.

Head in, then go straight and open the door ahead.

Scene Rehearsal Puzzle

You’ll find yourself in the kitchen. There’s nothing to do here for now, so proceed further to the dining room, which has been repurposed into a rehearsal space.

Dead Take walkthrough

First, go right and check the whiteboard to find a shot list and a storyboard. You can ignore the shot list.

The storyboard shows one vent from three angles with one circled. We need to recreate this shot perfectly, and also fill in details according to the script, which you can find to the left of the background, near the table and lamp.

The script pages are successive and include Duke’s corrections. We need to satisfy the final script page – but it should also include the details that did not need to be corrected.

First, pick up all the props in the area:

  • The rose (table near script)
  • The sailor’s hat (table near script)
  • Prop Holy Bible (left mannequin’s hands)
  • Captain’s hat (left mannequin’s head)
  • Cowboy hat (middle mannequin’s head)
  • Prop handgun (right mannequin’s hand)

Next, we’ll set the background. Go to the back of the room and up the stairs. Go to the end of the walkway and interact with the button to set a night scene.

Now return to the scene and change the mannequins’ poses to resemble the storyboard. The left mannequin should be kneeling, the middle mannequin should be reclining, and the right mannequin should be standing (which it already is).

Place the Prop Holy Bible in the middle mannequin’s hands, and the Prop Singular Rose in the rightmost mannequin’s hand. Also place the Captain’s hat on the rightmost mannequin’s head.

As for the left mannequin, place your screwdriver in his hand.

Dead Take walkthrough

Now interact with the long handle to the right of the camera, so that you push the camera to the left. This will get us the desired position as circled on the storyboard.

Dead Take walkthrough

Provided you got everything else right, we’re now ready for our shot. Interact with the camera’s big red button. If you got it right, a sequence will play out. If not, nothing will happen.

Pick up the flash drive from the mannequin’s hand and exit the dining room and the kitchen.

The Second Splice

You can now access a shortcut to the entertainment wing – just go down the stairs and open the door.

Dead Take walkthrough

Return to the projector room now and as usual, use the flash drive on the reader to gain access to a new video: YELLOW_BELLY.

Once you’re done watching the video (or not), go ahead an use Splaice to splice BLUE_MOON and YELLOW_BELLY.

Load the resulting video, GREEN_EYED_MONSTER and watch it in the cinema.

After the video, go ahead and open the cinema door.

Film Development Puzzle

Approach the reels and pick up the red bulb on top of them.

Then, look right and go through the door with the red light above it. Here you’ll find a digitizer – we need to use this, but first we need to prepare a reel for it.

Interact with the white bulb in this room and then pick up the roll of film that appears in front of you.

Return to where the white bulb was and place a red bulb this time.

In this slightly maze-like room, we need to develop the roll of film as shown in the development diagram.

The process is – Wash, Develop, Stop, Fix, Wash. Read the note to the left to find out which chemicals are to be used for which process.

Dead Take walkthrough

There is also a color-coded guide elsewhere in the room, which shows the color and formula for each chemical. You don’t really need to pay attention to the formulae if you can remember the colors.

First, wash the roll of film by interacting with the yellow machine and placing the roll of film in it. Remember to press the big white button.

Collect the washed roll of film and take it to the pink machine (phenidone). Repeat the process here.

Then do the same with the red machine (ammonium thiosulfate), and finally the blue machine (acetic acid). At the end of it all, wash it again in the yellow machine.

If you mess up the process, simply start over by washing in the yellow H2O machine as your first step.

Once you’re done with the process, pick up the roll of film and turn around.

When you’re back in the digitizer room, put the roll of film on the digitizer and hit the green button.

Pick up the red flash drive and as usual, return to the projector room to get a new video.

The Third Splice and VHS Puzzle

Watch the video if you like. When you’re ready to proceed, splice the video RED_HERRING with YELLOW_BELLY.

Load the video ORANGE_COUNTY and watch it in the cinema. Then, as usual, open the cinema door.

Approach the TVs and pick up the VHS tape jammed into one of them. You may have picked up up to four similar tapes elsewhere in the mansion, but if you haven’t, then now’s the time to do that.

Dead Take walkthrough

You’ve collected Eleven Lock already, so here’s the locations for the others:

  • Red Valley: On the second floor, go to the Torch bedroom, then the bathroom through it, and open the medicine cabinet.
  • Mbombo’s Reign: On the first floor, go to the open elevator near the art gallery.
  • Machine Play: In the courtyard, approach the art gallery window and check near the teddy bear.
  • Akazard: In the kitchen, check the lit portion of the counter.

When you’ve collected all five VHS tapes, enter the Mountain Bedroom on the second floor.

Here, check the memorial shelf with several grey slabs presented as if they were VHS covers. We need to place our VHS tapes in these slots in the right order.

To find the right order, check the guestbook to the left of the door and under the teddy bear.

The correct order is the one with the note “my little angel”.

In short, place Eleven Lock on the top shelf, then Red Valley, then Mbombo’s Reign, then Machine Play, and finally Akazard.

Enter through the new door to find the Security Office.

Security Office, Mouse Bedroom, UV Flashlight

Here, pick up the phone inside the gray tray. This is Vinny’s phone, and we’ve already heard the PIN code for it in the first video we watched.

Dead Take walkthrough

Enter that code here: 4328.

Check Vinny’s messages and head to the Duke Cain chat. There, read through the entries to learn that there’s a gift in the Mouse Bedroom. You also get the code for the Mouse Bedroom here, so head back to the entertainment wing.

Dead Take walkthrough

The Mouse Bedroom can be found near the elevator. Enter the code you found on the phone on the keypad (1016) to enter.

Inside, pick up the UV flashlight on the bed and turn it on.

Exit the bedroom and follow the trail of puddles past the elevator and up the stairs. It will lead you all the way to the Torch Bedroom.

Once there, interact with the movie poster for “The Lullaby” and pick up the flash drive on the other side.

The Final Splice and Ending

Return to the projector room, plug in the flash drive, and load the new video, DYING_OF_HUNGER.

Watch the video in the cinema and open the door after it’s over. Pick up another flash drive on the bed and as usual, plug it in the reader in the projector room.

Load the new video and watch it in the cinema.

You’ll get a couple new messages on your phone toward the end of the video. Head out of the cinema.

The party here will block you off from most areas of the mansion. Go up the stairs and navigate to the topmost floor.

Then, go to the office with the Trophy symbol. Inside, approach the desk and get as close as you can.

After the sequence, approach the table and interact with the cloche. Pick up the handgun.

Exit the room, walk the red carpet, and follow the path to the bathroom and ‘take your shot’ at Vinny.

Exit the bathroom and follow the path. When you reach the cinema, exit it and then proceed through the next door.

In the dark room, you’ll have to wait for Vinny’s message to conclude. Then, proceed through the hallway and into the elevator.

Press the elevator control button to go down.

Once at the bottom ‘floor’, go straight and interact with the camera to take your shot.

This concludes the game.
