Scarlet Hollow is what you get when a small coal town in middle America runs headfirst into something genuinely unsettling. The town is tucked away in the mountains of North Carolina, and it is very clear that its best days are long gone. You come here because of family. Your cousin, Tabitha Scarlet, reaches out and invites you to attend the funeral of your aunt Pearlanne Scarlet, a woman you never even met. The Scarlet name still means something in town, though not always in a good way. There are whispers about a curse tied to the family. You will slowly uncover all the secrets the town has to offer.
The story itself plays out like a visual novel. There is no running around or action based gameplay. Everything moves through written dialogue and the choices you make in conversations. Those choices are not static either. The personality traits you selected at the beginning shape what options appear. Some responses only show up if your character has the right background or ability. Because of that, two playthroughs can feel noticeably different even if the overall plot follows the same path.
But if I’m being honest, the episodes don’t really branch out that much. They look like they might at first, but most of the time, you’re still being funneled down the same main path. You can take a small detour here and there, maybe get a slightly different scene or line of dialogue, but it doesn’t take long before you’re pushed right back onto the central track.

Personality Traits
So when you start the game, after picking your name and hometown, you get hit with the personality trait choice. There are seven total. On a normal run you can grab two. If you’re doing Hardcore, you get three, but the game straight up warns you that one might not be usable at a critical moment. So it’s not a free advantage.

Here’s what they actually do, based on playing through multiple times.
POWERFUL BUILD
Exactly what you think. You can move heavy stuff, intimidate people physically, that kind of thing. Sounds simple, but it’s a big deal in Episode 1. If you don’t have STRONG, saving Duke and Gretchen becomes… complicated. With it, that situation is solvable. Without it, good luck.
MYSTICAL
This gives you extra insight when supernatural stuff is happening. You’ll notice more details during spirit-related events. It’s nice for understanding what’s going on behind the scenes, but weirdly it doesn’t swing outcomes as hard as you’d expect considering how paranormal some episodes get.
TALK TO ANIMALS
You can talk to animals. That’s it. And honestly? Worth it just for the conversations with Gretchen the dog and Dustin the opossum. There are interactions you straight up miss if you don’t take this. It’s not always life-or-death useful, but it adds a lot.
STREET WISE
You’re better at lying, spotting lies, and you can pick locks. It feels similar to KEEN EYE sometimes because both unlock extra dialogue, but STREET WISE is more about social manipulation and practical skills. In Episode 1, if you want into the forbidden wing of the mansion, you need this. No trait, no entry.
KEEN EYE
You pick up on subtle clues and small environmental hints. It unlocks a lot of extra dialogue. In Episode 2, it’s essential if you want to save Rosalina without her getting injured. That’s not optional if you’re going for a clean run.
HOT
People find you attractive. Relationships are easier. That matters more than you’d think. In Episode 4, if you want to free Reese without Dr. Kelly dying, you need HOT. It seems tied to romancing him.
BOOK SMART
You get more info and better options in technical or academic situations. Episode 3 is where this really matters. It lets you defeat the ghost without sacrificing years of your life or Tabby’s. Without BOOK SMART, somebody’s lifespan is getting drained.
After a few runs, it feels like KEEN EYE, STREET WISE, and TALK TO ANIMALS give you the most extra dialogue overall. You see more branches, more little variations.
STRONG, HOT, BOOK SMART, and MYSTICAL feel more “moment specific.” They don’t constantly show up, but when they do, it’s usually at a turning point.
Also, and this is just my opinion, some dialogue unlocks feel like extra clarification rather than essential info. The sound design and art direction are strong enough that you can usually tell what’s happening. But technically your character doesn’t “know” certain things unless you have the right trait.
The smoothest run I’ve had so far came from picking STRONG and BOOK SMART.
That combo let me:
- Save Duke and Gretchen in Episode 1
- Leave no one behind in the mine in Episode 2
- Beat the spirit in Episode 3 without sacrificing anyone’s lifespan
- Keep both Reese and Dr. Kelly alive in Episode 4
There’s no single trait that dominates everything. Some just open conversations. Others prevent disasters. If you’re trying to minimize casualties, STRONG and BOOK SMART feel the safest right now. If you care more about exploring dialogue variations, KEEN EYE or STREET WISE probably give you more to work with.
