In Chapter 3, you will have to find the person who made an attempt on the life of Linnet Doyle by mixing glass shards in their lunch. Fortunately, no one was harmed, but the attempt won’t go unpunished in the presence of the master detective Poirot.

Introduction

Hercule Piorot is finally on the Karnak, setting sail through the Nile towards the temple of Abu Simbel. He’s journeying alongside the Doyles, who’ve recently gotten married and have been chased around the world by Jacqueline de Bellefort.

As the chapter begins, the crew announces lunch time, and so all the guests are to be gathered in the restaurant on the lower deck.

Get into the restaurant, and you’ll find a gentleman standing near the table in the middle of the restaurant. Approach him to trigger the cutscene.

The Lunch

Piorot takes his seat beside the two gentlemen. All the guests are gathered here, and Poirot had been asked for his opinion on rich people.

As the lunch begins, each guest is served a caviar verrine with walnuts.

Shortly, Mr. Simon Doyle screams out loud, saying that there are glass shards in his wife’s dish. Fortunately, she didn’t eat anything and is unharmed.

Piorot decides that he’s going to investigate further after the meal. He’s suspicious that there’s more than meets the eye, and this might be attempted murder. He asks the waiter to leave the dish as is, and he’ll be coming to inspect it soon.

Investigating The Caviar Verrine

There are stairs leading to the kitchen in the restaurant; take them and you’ll reach it.

Interrogate the chef, and it will reveal that the verrine was prepared just before serving, and was delivered to the restaurant through the dumbwaiter, a mechanism.

You can also inspect the caviar verrine here. It will reveal that the addition of glass shards was indeed an attempt on Linnet Doyle’s life. You will also get a topic for Blue Bottle, because the verrine contained blue glass shards.

Making Connections With The Verrine

If you open the Mind Map right now, you’ll encounter two golden puzzle nodes. You can also make several connections here.

First, select the missing ingredient in the verrine node. You’ll have to select the ingredient missing from the affected verrine, which is walnuts.

Now, select the node that discusses when the glass shards were added to the dish. Since the glass shards are only on the top, you can select that the shards were added to the verrine after preparation.

Doing so will unlock the purple node that the chef finished the preparations for the verrine just before serving them. You can pair it with the fact that the shards were added after preparation.

Select the new purple node that states that the shards were added between preparation and the dish’s arrival at the table, and pair it with the reason that all the passengers were present during the meal.

This will unlock the golden node where you have to select the remaining suspects. You can attempt this right now, but it’s best to leave it like this until you’ve talked to each of the crew members.

You can talk to the chef again about walnuts and the blue bottle. The chef will point out that they received an order for a walnut-free verrine, but don’t know who ordered it. Furthermore, the conversation will also reveal that there’s no blue bottle in the kitchen.

Greeting The Mechanic

Right outside the kitchen, you’ll find the door leading to the engine room. The mechanic here is an especially rude person.

However, if you were to talk to Mr. Fleetwood about the blue bottle, he would suggest that you ask around in the bar.

The bar is on the middle deck. But, before you head there, you should talk to the Doyles.

Miss Linnet Doyle will reveal that she’s the one who ordered the verrine without walnuts, because she’s allergic to them.

Furthermore, the couple has decided to put this matter behind them, since there’s no Jackie around anymore.

As you reach the bar on the middle deck, you’ll find Samir Jalal behind the counter, a member of the crew.

Samir will reveal that he’s in charge of collecting the dishes from the dumbwaiter and serving them to the customers. He failed to notice the glass shards because such a thing had never happened before.

When you ask Samir about a blue bottle, it will be revealed that there was indeed a blue bottle in the bar, but it is missing now.

The Black Smoke

If you head to the top deck after all this, Piorot will notice black smoke coming out of the funnel, but no one else seems to notice.

There’s a crew member here on the drinks counter that you can interrogate. His name is Tarek.

Tarek will give you some very good clues and facts. It will be revealed that the dumbwaiter broke when the verrines were about to go up, and had to be fixed by the mechanic.

Tarek made it clear that, in the meantime, he had been helping the chef until the mechanic was done with the dumbwaiter.

Sailing Through The Nile

There’s the captain’s room right on the top deck, behind Tarek’s counter.

The captain will tell you he was piloting the ship during lunch, precisely because they’re passing through a rough stretch and he’s the only one who can pilot the ship safely.

However, that changes the moment you tell him about the black smoke. The captain will hand you the wheel and will go to the engine room to talk to the mechanic.

Piloting the ship isn’t super difficult. You just have to go south while avoiding the areas marked on the map to the right.

Slow down the ship when you’re passing through an especially tight path, and you’ll be able to come out unscathed.

You can also honk to get the tiny boats out of the way, but it won’t work if they’re already too close.

After you’re done, you can ask the captain to steer the ship again.

The captain will tell you that the mechanic is handling everything just fine.

Making Connections

Now that you’ve talked with every crew member, you can safely make more connections.

Pair the connection that Linnet Doyle’s verrine was missing walnuts with the fact that Linnet is allergic to them. This will give you the conclusion that only one verrine was prepared without walnuts, and that was for Miss Linnet.

Now, look for the fact that says only one verrine was corrupted, and pair it with the connection that you just made, stating that only one verrine was prepared without walnuts, and that was for Linnet Doyle.

This will allow you to deduce that the culprit was specifically targeting Linnet Doyle.

You can also solve the golden puzzle node, which asks you to select the five suspects. Now that you’ve talked to the crew members, mark all five of them as suspects, including the captain.

Now, another golden puzzle node will become available, asking you to arrange the events in chronological order.

The slots will already start with the captain steering the ship in the first spot. The cook then prepares the verrines in the second slot. Put the fact that the dumbwaiter is repaired by the mechanic on the third slot.

Tarek then sends the dishes through the dumbwaiter in the fourth slot, and the dishes are finally served by Samir in the final slot.

Confronting The Mechanic

If you head to the engine room and talk to the mechanic, John Fleetwood, about the black smoke, he will be extremely rude, but fortunately, you can call him out on his words.

Select the sentence where Fleetwood says that black smoke doesn’t necessarily indicate a problem, and counter it with the fact that there’s a problem with the machinery.

The captain was rightly worried about the engine due to the black smoke, and Piorot will say the same to Fleetwood.

Fleetwood then gets mad and leaves the engine room, asking you to take care of the problem yourself.

There are two major points of interest here. The steam pipes on the left and the boiler, near where the mechanic was standing.

Repairing The Steam Pipes

Interact with the control panel on the left side of the room to open the interface where you’ll be moving around the pipes.

One of the joints is rusty, and you have to make a new route for the steam without using the rusted part.

Use the control option on the left alongside the options at the top to make a new route. At the end, you should end up with a connected path leading from one pipe to the other without using the rusted joint.

Now that the steam pipes are fixed, it’s time to handle the boiler.

Repairing The Boiler

The lower compartment of the boiler is locked due to the extreme pressure for safety reasons. You have to adjust the pressure by watching the gauge.

Rotate the valves on the top to make sure the gauge ends up in the green part to make it safe for Mr. Poirot to open the lower compartment.

Once the gauge is green, you’ll be able to open the lower compartment.

There’s a melted piece of glass in the lower compartment, but you need tools to pull it out.

There are gloves on the table next to the boiler.

You can also find tongs in the right-most part of this area, on top of some crates.

Once you’ve gotten these two items, you can pull the piece of melted glass out of the boiler.

After you’ve taken the piece of melted glass out, you’ll be able to make the connection that the blue bottle that went missing from the bar ended up in the boiler.

Searching The Dormitory

We’ve likely got our prime suspect, but we still need to look for the motive. One of the objectives is to search the crew’s dormitory.

It will be in the under-deck area, where the kitchen and the engine room are. The door to the dormitory will have 001 plated on it.

Inside the room, you’ll find a letter on the desk. The letter will be from an angry woman, complaining that she almost married the recipient, and it was thanks to her boss that she managed to find out about the recipient’s previous marriage.

Hercule Piorot will be thinking hard about how he has heard a similar story, but can’t pinpoint it.

If you go to the dialogue history of the characters, you’ll find Linnet talking to her friend in the disco club during the Prologue, Joanna Southwood, about her maid and how the man turned out to be already married.

Inspecting the letter will also unlock a golden puzzle node. You have to select Linnet here.

Mental Reconstruction

That was the last piece of the puzzle we needed. Now, the central node will turn into a golden puzzle node, and you can start the mental reconstruction of the events.

At 12:30 pm, assign the person who breaks the bottle as Mr. Fleetwood, the mechanic. The chef and Samir didn’t leave their stations, so they’ll be in the same spot during all the time slots.

Put Samir in the restaurant serving the dishes. He doesn’t do anything else. Steward Tarek will be preparing the dishes at the 12:30 time slot.

At 12:32, Tarek puts the dishes in the dumbwaiter. You’ll have to assign Flintwood as the person who sabotaged the dumbwaiter from the engine room.

At 12:34, Flintwood puts shards of glass in the verrine. The chef is working on the main dish, and Tarek is preparing side dishes. Samir is still in the restaurant, serving the customers.

At 12:36, Flintwood repairs the dumbwaiter, and Tarek starts to send the dishes to the restaurant via the repaired dumbwaiter.

Most of the things remain the same for the 12:38 pm time slot, except that Flintwood is the one throwing the blue glass bottle in the boiler.

Wrapping Up

After the mental reconstruction is done, Piorot will immediately tell the captain about Fleetwood’s actions and his involvement in the attempted murder.

The captain and the stewards then take Fleetwood in custody to give him over to the police at the next port.

Reporting To Linnet Doyle

Linnet is still in the saloon, but when you get there, she’ll be in an important meeting.

You can eavesdrop on the conversation from behind the shade in the saloon and find out that Mr. Pennington is trying to make Linnet sign a contract without revealing its contents.

Once Mr. Pennington leaves, Piorot approaches Linnet. However, after seeing that Linnet is in such a good mood, he refrains from spoiling the mood with the news of the attempted murder of her.

The Dinner

The announcement for dinner is made, and Piorot has to make his way to the restaurant.

Mrs. Allerton and her son invite Hercule Piorot to sit with them for dinner.

Mrs. Allerton will ask you to identify certain individuals in the restaurant hall. She’ll take the name, and you’ll have to identify them.

She first asks you to spot Cornelia Robson. She’s the girl sitting with her mother, who’s wearing a scarf, and a nurse.

You will then have to identify Mr. Ferguson, the man who had an extreme opinion on the rich people. You can find him sitting just to the left.

Lastly, you’ll have to identify Dr. Bessner. He’s sitting with Mr. Pennington and is bald; you won’t be able to miss him.

The Threat

As everyone is peacefully enjoying their dinner, Jacqueline de Bellefort shows up in the restaurant, claiming that she had been inside her cabin since the boat left and finally decided to come out.

Feeling the threat, Linnet Doyle immediately leaves the restaurant room.

If you talk to Jackie now, Piorot will advise her not to go down this path, but his advice will fall on deaf ears.

You have to make your way to your room.

Piorot’s room is labeled 214, and you can find it on the middle deck, after going upstairs from the restaurant.

Once inside the room, interact with Piorot’s bed to complete the chapter, which will trigger a short cutscene, where Piorot feels excited about arriving at Abu Simbel soon.
