Ancient Farm offers you a unique farming simulator experience in the deserts of Ancient Egypt, where you have to farm, raise animals, and sell your goods all by yourself as you expand your territory, as well as the variety of your produce. For more information on Ancient Farm, visit its official Steam page here.
The game offers you a lot of freedom, but before you can take on any of that, you’ll have to complete an optional but lengthy tutorial that guides you through most of the basics. However, even the tutorial doesn’t tell you everything, and that’s where this walkthrough comes in.
Table of contents
Settling In
As you arrive in this new land, you’ll find the area to be filled with rocks, trees, bushes, and other debris. The first thing you get is a hammer. It will be automatically added to your inventory.
Pick the hammer from your inventory and add it to a quick slot to equip it. Once you’ve equipped the hammer, click it and select the option to build a workshop.

The game marks the area where you have to place the structure for the workshop. You can spot this area by a golden circle of light. Place the workshop inside the circle, but doing so only places a placeholder, and you’ll have to supply the resources to it to finish building the workshop.
You’ll need 15 units of sticks and 10 units of stones to complete the building process for the workshop. Note that you can find these resources scattered around in the area, and you don’t need any tools to gather these materials. Once you’re done, interact with the workshop to finish building it.

Preparations To Grow Crops
After setting up a workshop, you’ll have to clear the nearby marked area. You’ll find some rocks, sticks, and bushes here. You can remove the bushes by crafting a sickle from the workshop. Once the area is clean, you’ll need to craft a hoe from the workshop.
Equip the hoe and head over to the marked area. Here, you have to till the soil using the hoe. After that, open your inventory and equip the carrot seeds in a quick slot. Use the carrot seeds on the recently tilled soil, and you’ll be able to plant them.

Watering The Crops
Now, you have to head over to the workshop to craft a bucket. You’ll need grass for it, and you can get grass by using the sickle on the plantation in the area. Once you’ve crafted it, take it to the river nearby and collect the water using the bucket.
The quest asks you to head over to the marked area to collect water, and while it’s difficult to spot it among all the trees, you can look at the sky, and that will make it a lot easier for you to find it.

To water the plants, you’ll need a water jug, but a water jug can only be crafted with clay. Now, you have to craft a clay scoop from the workshop.
The clay scoop allows you to gather clay from the clay deposits, and you’ll find one marked in the area after you’ve crafted the clay scoop. Approach this muddy clay deposit and use the clay scoop on it to gather clay. Once you’ve gathered at least 10 units of clay, return to the workshop to craft a water jug.
Once you’ve crafted it, equip the water jug and use that to water the carrot seed that you’ve just planted. Plants require to be watered once every cycle, so you’ll have to wait a little before the plant is ready for harvest.

Harvesting The Crops
You’ll also have to craft a scythe to harvest any plants. You can do so by heading over to the workshop and interacting with the portrait of the scythe.
If the crop isn’t ready yet, you can speed up the cycle multiple times by pressing F4. Don’t forget to water the plant. The details in the bottom-right corner show how many cycles are remaining until the plant is ready to be harvested.
Once the crop is ready, use the scythe on it, and it will add the materials to your inventory. Once a farmed field has been used to grow a crop, you won’t be able to sow the seeds on the same field until you clear the remains of the last crop.

Gathering Tools And Processing Stations
The next step is to craft tools so you can build processing stations. These processing stations can produce materials that are required to build more advanced structures and buildings.
Gathering Wood And Crafting Planks
Head over to the workshop and craft an axe. You’ll then have to head out and use the axe on the trees to gather wood. Once you’ve gathered enough, you’ll have to collect a few stones and sticks.
After that, equip your hammer and select the option to build a carpentry station. Once the carpentry station is set up, you’ll be able to use it to convert wood into planks.

Building A Stonecutter Station
Building a stonecutter station is similar to setting up the carpentry station. Equip the hammer and look under the crafting stations until you find the stonecutter structure.
Place the structure in a suitable place and deliver all the required resources to it. Keep in mind that you can produce planks with the carpentry station. Once the stonecutter station is all set up, you can use it to convert 6 units of stone into 2 stone blocks.

You can then craft a pickaxe from the workshop and use it to mine more stone to turn them into stone blocks, which will be required for more structures later on.
Now, you’ll have to craft at least two stone blocks and use them to build a shovel from the workshop. Use the shovel on the remains of the crop in the farm field to make it ready for crops again.

The Merchant
After you’ve cleaned the field with a shovel, you’ll get another bag of carrot seeds in your inventory that you can use to plant on the same field. Once that’s done, the game will tell you about the merchant.
The merchant arrives at the start of each season and stays there for a few cycles before sailing away. You can sell your produce to the merchant or buy seeds, animals, and schemes for structures from them.

Keep in mind that if you sell the same type of product multiple times, its price will eventually go down with each unit that you sell. On the other hand, if you don’t sell a product for a long time, its price will go up. These price changes will remain active for several cycles.
You can find the merchant on the pier near the river. This area will be marked with a yellow circle during the tutorial quest. Note that the merchant is only present at the start of each cycle, so if the merchant isn’t there, you can speed up the time to reach the next cycle quickly.

Purchasing Seeds From The Merchant
Once the merchant arrives, you’ll have to purchase a seed bag from them. The game then asks you to purchase any seed bag. You can find a variety of seeds under the seeds tab of the shop. Double-click on the wheat seeds to purchase them.
Now that you’ve gotten some wheat seeds, you have to check the seasons. There are three seasons in the game: Peret, Shemu, and Akhet. Most crops, including wheat, don’t grow in the Shemu season.
If you plant the wheat during this season, it will wither away. Make sure the season is either Peret or Akhet, so that you can easily grow the wheat.

Building A House
After purchasing the wheat, you’ll have to collect resources, including planks and stone blocks. Use these resources to place a brickyard. Once you’ve placed a brickyard, you’ll be able to convert clay into clay bricks.
Now, you have to place the foundation of a house. Equip your hammer and select the house from there. A wide and clear area will be marked on the map, and you can place the foundation of your house there.

Once that’s done, you’ll have to deliver all the required materials, which include: 20 units of grass, 6 planks, 9 stone blocks, and 9 clay bricks. You’ll also need a house scheme, which can be purchased from the merchant for 2400 gold coins.
After gathering all the materials, use them on the foundation of the house to finish building it.

Preparing Bread
Now that your house is ready with a working kitchen where you can cook meat or prepare bread, you’ll have to plant some more wheat seeds.
Head to the merchant and purchase at least 4 wheat seed bags. After that, head over to your farm where you’ve tilled the soil and plant all of these wheat seeds. Don’t forget to double-check the seasons and avoid planting them in the Shemu season.

Keep watering the wheat every cycle and speed up the time, so the wheat grows quickly. Once it’s ready, you’ll have to use your scythe to harvest the wheat.
Now, use your hammer to set up a mill. You’ll find the mill under the crafting station section of the build menu. After setting up the mill, use the wheat grains on it to turn them into flour.
Once you’ve got the flour, head over to your house and find the oven in the kitchen. You’ll be able to craft multiple units of bread with it. You can then sell the bread to the merchant for some extra gold.

Planting A Tree
The game will mark an area near the workshop where you can grow a tree. You’ll have to clean this place and clear any stones, sticks, or grass from this area.
After that, you’ll have to use your hoe to till a 3×3 unit of land. It will result in a small 9-unit farm field. You’ll automatically get coffee beans in your inventory, and you can use them to place a coffee tree on this spot.

Unlike usual plants, the trees continue to produce multiple times, as long as you keep watering them. The produce is much less compared to what you get from plants, but trees provide consistently and can last for a long time, even without watering.
You’ll then have to wait a few cycles and keep watering the tree until it fully matures and starts producing coffee beans. Now, you have to head back to the workshop and craft a fruit picker.
You can only harvest trees with a fruit picker. Once you’ve crafted it, use it on the tree to get the coffee beans in your inventory.

Animal Husbandry
Now that we’ve gotten everything about the crops, it’s time to focus on the animals. You’ll have to set up a cow farm site. This is a large structure, so you’ll have to make sure the place is clean of all the stones and sticks, as well as trees, before you can place it.
Deliver all the required materials to the farm site after setting its foundation to finish building it. The game will add a young cow to your inventory.
You can add the cow to your farm by interacting with the board near the gate. Note that this cow isn’t going to produce as much meat as the cow purchased from the merchant.

Return to the workshop, and here, you’ll have to build an animal waterer. You can make all the animals drink water through this tool. However, for the food, you’ll have to set up a thatching station to turn grass into hay.
After acquiring both the hay and the animal waterer, you’ll have to feed the cow for several cycles until it fully matures. Shortly after, you’ll have to set up a beef slaughterhouse.

Once that’s done, go back to the workshop and craft a knife. You can use the knife on any livestock to gain their relevant produce, but that will also remove the animals from the farm.
You’ll instead get slabs of beef from the cow, and you’ll have to take them to the slaughterhouse to get pieces of beef roast. You can then take the beef roast pieces to the kitchen inside the house to get cooked meat.

Oxen And Harnesses
The game allows you to use oxen to plow the land to make farming a lot easier. For that, you’ll first have to set up a small barn.
You can do so by using the build menu from the hammer. The small barn will require a scheme, which can be purchased from the merchant.

Deliver the required resources alongside the scheme to the foundation of the small barn. Once the barn is complete, head back to the merchant to buy an ox. Note that you can get money by selling crops first if you don’t have enough gold to buy the ox.
Approach the barn, and you’ll find a small wooden board near the entrance. Interact with the wooden board to add the ox to the barn.

Building A Coach House
Now, you’ll have to set the foundation of a coach house. Make sure the coach house is set up near the small barn. The coach house also requires a scheme, so purchase that from the merchant.
After you’ve built the coach house, you’ll need a plow. Plows of different sizes can also be purchased from the merchant. For the quest, you’ll need a small plow, so buy it and return to the coach house.

There’s a wooden board on the outside of left wall from the entrance. Interact with the wooden board to add the small plow to the coach house.
Go to the ox in the barn, and select the option to lead. Lead the ox to the coach house, and the plow will be there on the ground. Once the ox is near the plow, open the action menu and select the harness option.

Doing so will attach the plow to the ox, and you’ll be able to ride the plow as the ox heads out of the coach house. Now, you can select the plow button to till large areas of land easily using the ox.
This will complete the tutorial walkthrough, and you’ll be free to do whatever you want in this farm of yours.

Frequently Asked Questions
How To Get Schemes?
You’ll need schemes to build some advanced structures in the game, such as a house, a barn, or a farm site. You can get these schemes from the merchant. Keep in mind that these schemes are quite expensive, and you’ll need a fair amount of gold coins to purchase them.
How To Attach The Plow To The Ox?
You’ll first have to lead the ox to the coach house. There’s a wooden board near the small entrance to the coach house. You can interact with it to specify and select the type of plow that you have. By default, you can use a small plow here, and it will appear in the middle of the coach house. Bring your ox near the plow and open the ox’s menu. From here, you have to select the harness option, and the ox will become automatically attached to the nearby plow.
How To Cook More Dishes?
If you’ve built a house, you’ll find a kitchen inside it that can be used to bake bread or cook meat. However, if you’re looking for more recipes to cook, you’ll have to set up relevant buildings. An advanced kitchen allows you to cook more complex dishes that require multiple ingredients. You can also set up a bakery if you’re looking for more flour-related dishes.
