Welcome to the Into Indie Games walkthrough guide for Carto. This is a puzzle-focused guide to complete the story and it does not cover extras or hidden collectibles.
Learn more about Carto here.
Begin by connecting your existing tile to the other tiles on the map, and then head towards the Story Chalet once more.
Inside, watch the conversation unfold, and then head downstairs to find a box puzzle. This one is really easy. Put the small box on the middle mat, then the large box on the third mat, and then the small box on top of the large box.
Head back up to let the Storytender know, and he’ll assign you another batch. This one is more complicated. We’ll number the boxes according to the number of books in them, so 1 is the smallest and 4 is the largest.
Follow these steps:
Place 1 and 2 on the two empty mats. Place 1 on 2. Place 3 on the empty mat. Place 1 on 4. Place 2 on 3. Place 1 on 2. Now, place 4 on the rightmost mat. Place 1 on the empty mat. Place 2 on 4. Place 1 on 3. Place 2 on the empty mat. Place 1 on 2. Place 3 on 4. Place 1 on the empty mat, and then place 2 on 3. Now, finally, you can place 1 on 2 and finish your task.
Go back upstairs to let the Storytender know. After he gives you another batch, go downstairs again.
This time, there’s way too many boxes. Thankfully, they’re in another room. Open up your map and swap the rooms to your left and right. If you get it correct, you’ll hear a little sound effect. The map should look like this (note the room icons):
Let the Storytender know again and follow him downstairs. Talk to him again and then go to the Island Room, which should be to your right.
Talk to Shianan, and afterwards, read one of the books in the room that’s labelled “The Dirt of Luck”. After the conversation that follows, head back outside the Story Chalet.
Head to the boat and talk to Shianan to set sail.
Once you’re on the high seas, you’ll need your trusty worm instead of your map. Bring up your inventory and notice how the worm looks. Talk to Shianan and head in the direction it’s pointing.
In the second go, he will resemble a letter. This is your next clue, so if he is shaped like an N, go North.
In the next screen, the worm is shaped like ’11’. This means you need to go ’11 o clock’.
In the next one, the worm will be shaped like a question mark. Pick ‘All of the Above’.
Once you reach the island, you need to talk to all the villagers here, of which there are seven in all. After you’ve talked to them, Shianan will appear on the map. Go to her location and talk to her.
Your next hint is to go to the Fishing Festival, which takes place on the Big Fish Loch.
To start the festival, you need to connect four lake tiles so that they form the image of a fish, like so (Note that this image is from when the festival begins and the other areas are locked out. You only need to form this layout to trigger the festival):
Now find the boy with the stick and talk to him. He’ll give you a drawing of the four fish you need to find. To get the fish, you need to arrange the lake itself to look like the fish in question. Here’s a gallery of the four shapes:
If you get it right, you’ll get a message saying ‘The waters are stirring’. Interact with the water, and when the bobber moves, tap the interact button quickly to grab the fish.
After getting all four fish, Carto will celebrate. Head to the villager who asks you to show him your catch and he’ll award you. This finishes the chapter as well.
