The Beginning & Unlocking the Paintbrush (Weapon)

After the intro cutscene and credits, you wake up in front of a large tree. There’s not much you can do at the moment. So start heading right.

Jump down from the broken bridge and continue moving right.

You’ll reach a set of floating temporary platforms. Use them to head all the way to the top.

Once you reach the top of the area, head right to enter through a narrow passage into the next section.

You’ll find more floating platforms here. Keep jumping on them to head upward.

At the top of the zone, head right. Wait for the purple flower platforms to open and then use them to jump across.

Run to the end of the area to trigger a cutscene. Once it ends, you’ll find yourself inside a cave.

The path to the left is blocked because of the avalanche. Head right.

You’ll soon arrive in front of a large flower with an NPC sitting on it. This is Frida. Run through her dialogues, and in the end, she’ll hand you the Paintbrush. Now you can attack with the Square/X button.
Unlocking the First Resting Area

Keep going right and break the broken stone objects you see up ahead. In Constance, breaking these objects restores your health.

A few steps past it, you’ll see two purple flowers with a glowing crystal. Break them for Glimmer, the main currency in this game.

Break the wall past the flowers and continue moving forward. You’ll have to break a few more walls until you reach the next section.

You’ll face some enemies in the next room. Take them down using the Paintbrush and keep moving forward through the zone.

When you reach a floating platform, you’ll have to drop down.

At the bottom, go left and hit the wall to reveal a hidden path.

Follow the path and jump up to the ledge with the lever. Hit the lever to open the door on the right side of this area. Before you get there, make sure you collect the Glimmer from the flowers above you.

Once that’s done, head right to reach the next part of the zone.

In the next room, keep moving right while defeating enemies and picking up Glimmers. You’ll also be able to heal by breaking the stone objects up ahead.

As you enter a chamber at the end, a barrier appears on two sides. This triggers a gauntlet.

After defeating the enemies, you’ll find a chest. Break the chest to gain some more Glimmer. Once the barrier goes away, head right to reach the next room.

You’ll reach an area with two paths in front of you: right or bottom. If you’re low on health, you can head right across the platforms to find a health pot. Break it to restore your health.

Return to the previous room and drop all the way to the bottom while avoiding the thorns and the enemies.

The path to the right is blocked by some glowing thorns. So head left.

Drop down the platforms and keep moving left. Defeat the enemies as you go to farm up some Glimmers.

When you get past a ledge, you’ll be stopped by an echo of Frida. She’ll talk to you and create the first Resting Point for you. Use it to rest and heal up.
Unlocking the Paint Dive (Brush Technique)

From the Resting Point, head left and jump up the platforms. Continue left to reach the next room.

This area is filled with enemies. You can kill them or run past them since they don’t target you directly. But they can be a good source of Glimmer early on since they are so close to the Resting Point. Head to the lower section of the room.

You’ll spot a ledge on the left. Climb to it and enter the next section.

Drop down to the canvas below. Press the Up button on your D-pad while standing in front of the canvas to unlock the Paint Dive Brush Technique.

You can now press R2 or RT to turn into paint and do a short dash forward. You can also use the ability while in the air.

You’ll see a new purple bar below your health bar. Your Brush Techniques consume some Paint from the purple bar anytime you use it. If it drops to zero, you’ll get Corrupted. In this state, you’ll have to wait for a while for the bar to recharge fully before using your Brush Techniques. Using Brush Techniques while Corrupted will drain your health.
Meeting Quip & Obtaining the Map

Now that you’ve unlocked the Paint Dive ability, head left and press R2 to dive under the clearing. Then jump up and Paint Dive through the thorns to reach the other side.

Climb to the top of the room and head right.

You’ll spot two enemies on the other side of a wall. You can Paint Dive past them. For the next wall, you’ll have to jump up and Paint Dive while in the air.

Continue moving forward, and you’ll find a platform to take you to the upper level. Keep Paint Diving past the hazards and defeating the monsters.

On the upper floor, you’ll see a chest on the right, on the other side of the wall. But you can’t reach it from your location.

Jump to the floor right above you using the platforms on the left. You can Paint Dive past the thorns to reveal a hidden passage.

Follow the passage to reach the chest. Break it to find your first Paint Flask. Collecting four of these will increase your maximum Paint, the purple bar under your health.

You can now paint dive through the narrow opening to return to the main path. Continue making your way to the top of the room and head right.

You’ll spot some glowing thorns as you go. You can Paint Dive through them, but you’ll take a bit of damage doing so.

You’ll eventually make your way back to an earlier room. From here, just keep heading right till you reach the room with the Resting Point. Rest up if you have to. Then go right, through the thorns on the upper section of the room.

Here, you’ll meet Quip, a friendly NPC who becomes a merchant in the main town. For now, he hands you a Map that you can use to get your bearings and asks you to make your way to Junction Town.
Unlocking the Precision Brush (Inspiration)

After talking to Quip, continue heading right. Keep moving forward past the enemies to make your way to the glowing thorn you found after dropping down earlier.

Now that you have your new Brush Technique, you can get past the thorn.

Go right and drop down the opening.

On the left platform, you’ll encounter a new type of enemy. Unlike the enemies you fought so far, this one will actually charge at you if it sees you. But other than that, it’s no threat and should go down easily.

Drop down again and head right. You’ll reach a gap. The main path is on the other side of the gap. But for now, you’ll want to go down.

At the bottom, head right into the small chamber. Stand in the glowing spot and watch the stars rush towards you. This gives you your first Inspiration Precision Brush.

Unlike Brush Techniques, you need to equip Inspirations while resting. They are similar to the Tools in Hollow Knight: Silksong, giving you certain buffs and bonuses. Precision Brush, for instance, adds a Critical Chance Modifier to your attack. It’s one of the best Inspirations in the game, and the fact that you got it this early will make the game a lot easier.
Reaching Janky Junction

Head back and climb the floating platforms to make your way upward. Go right this time, across the gap.

You’ll encounter some more enemies in the area. Take them down and continue heading up. There’s an exit on the top-right section of the room.

In the next room, you’ll find some more Glimmer Flowers above you. Defeat the enemy on the lower platform and drop down again.

There’s a flying enemy here. Take it down. Then dash through the thorns to reach the upper platform. If you fall down, go left to return to the room where you picked up the Inspiration.

Keep making your way up through the room. You’ll find the exit door on the left.

The next room doesn’t have any enemies for you to fight. So you can keep heading up. Note the black glowing barriers on the two sides of the room. We don’t have the right ability to get past them.

Head through the opening at the top of the room to reach the Janky Junction.

Go right and use the Resting Point to heal up. It’s also a good time to slot in your Inspiration.

Continue heading right to trigger another gauntlet.

Once all the enemies are defeated, Neolardo, the mayor of the town, will come out and greet you.

He’ll then mark the location of a Tear on your map that you need to collect.
Exploring the Town

Head right, past Neolardo, to find Quip. He has already set up his shop. Talk to him to check his wares.

For now he only has a Paint Flask, a Health Vial, and Map Icons. We recommend buying the Health Vial and the Map Icons. If you don’t have enough Glimmers, you can always farm up some more by heading back to the earlier area.

He’ll also mention that some of his cousins are lost. This gives you the Family Business side quest. Finding Quip’s cousins will expand his inventory, so it’s worth looking for them on your journey.

On the upper platform, you’ll meet Pearl, the robot attached to the Elevator. He’ll say something about system failure. Once you collect the first Tear, you can use the Elevator as a Fast Travel Point.

On the right section of the town, you’ll find a Train. But it doesn’t work right now. There’s an NPC here named Albert you can speak to.

When you’re done, head left and jump across the platforms in the upper level to reach the next zone.
