Dead Weight Walkthrough – Part 1

Abyss Dead Weight

Welcome to the Into Indie Games Part 1 walkthrough of Dead Weight.

Dead Weight is a turn-based strategy RPG where you have to face the ancient gods. You will travel on your flying pirate ship while enjoying a roguelite experience in a steampunk world. For more information, head over to its Steam page.

As this game is both a roguelite and a turn-based tactical RPG, there can be many complications. So, in this guide, we will provide you with a Part 1 walkthrough of Dead Weight.

Disclaimer

In Dead Weight. islands, loot, events, and enemy encounters are procedurally generated in each run, so your experience may differ from ours. You may not encounter the same events, enemies, or loot in the same order, and some things may not appear at all. That said, after completing numerous runs and spending several hours with the game, we’ve found that many important locations, encounters, and mechanics remain consistent across playthroughs. While the placement and order of certain things can change, the overall progression is similar enough for this walkthrough to serve as a reliable guide. Use this walkthrough as a reference rather than a step-by-step guide, as the game’s randomized nature means your playthrough will likely differ from ours.

Dead Weight Walkthrough – Getting Started

As you start the game, the first thing you should do is make it full screen. The game will not match the proportions of your screen because the full-screen option has been toggled off by default. So, turn it on and, once you have done that, start the game.

When the journey has started, you will be on your flying pirate ship, and an ambush will occur. Then, a battle against the goblins will begin.

Defeating The Goblins

This is the introduction to the battle mechanics of the game, so there are not going to be any major strategies at play. You simply have to do what the game tells you to do. Push the goblin that is standing in front of you into the abyss by using the Push option.

Then, move into the position of the goblin you just pushed and end your turn. The second goblin will miss its attack, so when its turn is over, move to the front of the goblin, which will be on your right side, and then push it into the abyss.

Attacking The Goblin’s Ship

Dead Weight walkthrough – defeat the goblins to continue.

Now you will be low on fuel, so what you need to do is take your ship to the nearest area, which will be the goblin’s ship. Head there and attack. There are going to be four goblins in total. You will also be introduced to the mechanic of pushing an object, which will push the enemy on the opposite side as well.

This is called a chain push. In front of you and behind you are boxes that you can push to knock the goblins into the abyss. Push both of them, and your turn will be over. Then, you will see a line of fire, so you need to move away from that location to dodge the bullet.

Move and end your turn. This will cause the other goblin to be shot, and now there is only one goblin left that you need to defeat. Defeat the last goblin, and you will receive 50 fuel.

Heading To The New Dawn

new dawn Dead Weight

You now have to head to the New Dawn and land the ship. As you do, you will have a conversation with some people, and then you will be pushed into the abyss.

You have now completed two objectives: Reach the Town and Die and Be Reborn. Now you have to complete the third objective, where you need to find the volcanic island and defeat Aluza. However, that will take some time, so what you need to do first is unlock the Lighthouse.

Unlocking The Lighthouse

peaceful goblins Dead Weight

Everything in the town will be locked, so what you need to do is head back to your ship and travel somewhere else. On the left side of the map will be a small floating island. Head there, as it will only cost 13 fuel. The goblins on this island are peaceful and will offer to sell you an item in exchange for some money.

You will have four options. So, you can either intimidate them, agree to the deal, start a fight, or leave. You will not be able to select the first or second option for now because you do not have any money. However, you can start a fight, and that is what we did.

Defeating The Goblins

We took a few hits because we were trying to figure out the pattern of their attacks. However, this fight is not going to be complicated. The goblin on the right side will use a swing attack that covers the three tiles directly in front of it.

So, what you need to do is move to either the right or left side of that goblin. The other goblin will use a ranged attack that seems to have a radius of two tiles. Because of this, you can easily make the goblins attack each other and then finish them off without much trouble.

Upon winning the battle, you will receive an Iron Sword, 150 fuel, 25 gold, 5 Favor, and 75 experience. You will also gain 1 Fatigue, and if your Fatigue reaches 10, you will be forced to be reborn.

Heading To Another Island

abandoned mine Dead Weight
Dead Weight walkthrough – use the cannon to breach the entrance of the abandoned mine.

Now, to the northwest of the New Dawn, there is another island. Head there, and once you arrive, you will get the option to use the cannon to breach the entrance. Do so, and then you will have to choose between two options. Do not risk the fuel barrels.

Then continue, and you will gain an additional point of Fatigue. Now, open your inventory and refuel your ship. After that, you can either go left or right. We went to the right and then attacked.

Defeating The Goblins

The enemy in front of you is a ranged attacker, so you do not want to stay directly in front of it. What you should do instead is head to the left side of the boulder and end your turn. Then, the goblins will move closer to you, so attack the one that is nearest to you and then move out of their attack range.

Try to make them stand in a single line so they can hurt each other. Once that happens, use your attack on the goblin at the front and then move to the side. If they are standing in a single line, the Lunge attack will deal damage to both of them.

In this fight, our character died because we were trying to defeat the enemies by using the Fury skill. So, if that happens to you, you will receive the Gift of the Abyss.

The Gift of the Abyss allows you to unlock some special abilities. Select the Heroes option and then unlock the Veteran skill. Now, you can also select a hero for yourself. You can choose any hero you want, but we went with Arn.

Continuing The Journey

gaby's workshop Dead Weight
Dead Weight walkthrough – use any of the options to upgrade your ship.

You can now unlock another skill. The best choice is going to be the On Edge skill. Once you have done that, head to the north of the town to the hot air balloon-type island. That is Gaby’s Workshop, where she can reinforce your ship. You will have three options to choose from. Select whichever one you want and then head to the left.

Attack the island, and you will have to face two goblins. One of them is going to lay down a trap, so be careful. Both of them attack from a distance, so move to the north side of the box on the right. Then, go in front of the goblin on the right and immediately move out of its attack range.

Then, you will only have to use one movement to attack the goblin. On the next turn, its attack will miss. You should push the goblin forward so that you can push it into the abyss later. Then, when its turn is over, move forward one tile and push the opponent into the abyss.

Then, move close to the other enemy while avoiding the traps. We did not take a single hit during this fight, and as the other goblin was close to being defeated, it escaped, and we received all of the loot.

Heading South Of The Town

Now, head south of the town and land your ship there. Once you do, you will discover that it is an abandoned mine. Use the cannon to breach the entrance and take the one fuel barrel. Then, head to the right and attack the goblin’s small island.

Defeating The Goblins

fighting goblins Dead Weight
Dead Weight walkthrough – defeating the goblins by pushing them into the abyss is more effective.

These are ranged attackers, so what you need to do is head to the right and make sure you are close to the goblin on the right while staying out of the range of its attack. Then end your turn, and once you do, both of them will attack.

Then, the goblin that is near you will move in front of you. When it does, you need to push it. Once you have done that, move close to the other goblin while staying outside its attack radius. Then defeat the remaining goblin and collect the loot.

Further to the south, you will notice an island with a scroll. Head there and land. You will then get two options. You can either take the artifact or leave. Select the first option, and you will get four more choices. Select any one of the first three options.

Then, equip the item you received and continue your journey. Head further south and attack the island.

Defeating More Goblins

You will now face two more goblins. Let them position themselves first. Then, move your character in front of the box. Push the box, and the goblin will fall into the abyss. After that, push the other goblin so you can throw it into the abyss as well.

Make sure you do not stay within the range of its attacks. It attacks in a straight line with a radius of two tiles, so simply stepping to the side will be enough to avoid getting hit.

Once you have won, you will level up, and the Lighthouse will be unlocked in the town. Use the skill tree upgrade to unlock the Battle Fervor 1 skill, and then it is time to head back to the town.

Heading Back To The Town

It will take a lot of fuel, but do not worry because you have a fuel tank in your inventory. Once you reach the town, you will notice that both the Tavern and the Lighthouse have been unlocked. Here, you can hire mercenaries, and you can also rest by paying 100 gold, which will reduce your Fatigue by 10.

Heading To The Lighthouse

Lighthouse unlocked in Dead Weight

Here, you can explore and discover what lies beyond the fog. However, the Lighthouse does not have very good equipment yet, so you will need to upgrade it. You can also buy a Telescope, which will let you see farther while traveling with your ship.

So, buy it, and then you will need to collect some more money.

Installing The Telescope

Now what you have to do is upgrade the lighthouse, but before that, make sure you buy the telescope. That is because the telescope will help you see farther from the ship and reveal what is hidden behind the clouds.

This is essential because you need to find the Volcano Island. So, buy the telescope, and it is time to continue the journey.

Heading East From the Town

Now what you need to do is head east from the town and continue progressing from there. That is because heading either south or north will take too much fuel since you have already explored those areas quite a bit.

As soon as you reach that location, click on the attack button, and then you will have to defeat some goblins.

Take Care of the Goblins

You will now have a partner with you, so the battle is going to be a little easier. First, move your main character out of the way, but do not end the turn after doing that. Make sure to use your other character’s turn as well.

Then the enemies will take their turn and try to gang up on your main character. Simply move out of their attack range and attack with your other character. What we did was push one goblin farther away so that it ended up in the attack range of another goblin.

Keep moving out of the enemies’ attack range and try to defeat them without taking a single hit. Your other character has only 1 HP, so make sure it does not get hit. Defeating the goblins without taking damage is fairly simple because their attacks are easy to dodge.

You will receive plenty of rewards along with a lot of fuel. Just ahead of this island is another one with an event, so it is a good idea to head there.

Heading to the Event Island

wandering tavern Dead Weight
Dead Weight walkthrough – The Wandering Tavern can help your character recover from fatigue.

This is going to be the Wandering Tavern, so if you are low on health, you can select the first option. That said, if you do not need healing, select the last option and continue on your way. From there, head northeast, and you will have to fight some goblins.

Hit the goblin on the left side of the area, then move your main character out of its attack range. After that, move the other character to the side, and one goblin should already be taken care of.

You now only have to defeat one more goblin, and by using the main character’s special skill, we were able to one-shot it. After that, we encountered a ship in the sky, and using the two cannons on it caused our fatigue to reach 10.

Because of that, we had to go to the Abyss. There, we received another Gift of the Abyss, which we used to unlock the Leader Ability.

Continuing The Journey From the Abyss

abyss Dead Weight

After you start the game again, head from the town to the hot air balloon, which is Gaby’s Workshop. Choose any upgrade and then head north to the island you see. There, we found the Spring, which can heal injuries and also reduce fatigue.

Since upgrading caused 1 Fatigue, choose the second option. Then head to the northeast island, where another battle will begin.

Defeating the Goblins

Now, once the goblins have taken their turn, it is your turn to move out of their attack range. Try to get close to the one standing near the edge, then push it into the Abyss. After that, we pushed the second one through the middle, and the fight was over.

Once you have defeated the goblins, you will have enough fuel to keep moving. You can head left for an event, but this will only increase your fatigue. Instead, head north and attack the first island.

Defeating the Group of Goblins

This time there are going to be four goblins, so this fight is going to be a little harder. However, this also means they will hit their own allies more often. Simply move out of the range of their attacks, and once their turn is over, hit the enemy closest to you before moving out of their attack range again.

If you need to travel two tiles to move out of their attack range, then do not attack. We managed to defeat them without taking a single hit because the key here is to stay out of their range and let them damage each other. Of course, you will still have to attack between turns, and once you figure out the pattern, they will go down very easily.

Up north is the Wandering Tavern, and if you select the second option, it will cost 20 Gold, but it will completely replenish your fatigue.

Heading Way Back to the Town

goblins Dead Weight
Dead Weight walkthrough – Make sure not to step on the mines laid down by one of the goblins.

Now you have to go back to the town, but that will be impossible with your current fuel. What you need to do instead is head to the island on the southeast side. Go there and attack. Once again, you will have to face four goblins.

Three of them will be standing in the same line after their turn, so use your Lunge attack to deal damage to at least two of them before moving out of their attack range. Make sure not to step on the mine.

Then, if you have enough Fury, use the Explosive Rage skill and take care of the goblin with the most health. After that, the rest will go down easily. Just make sure you stay out of their attack range, as simply stepping away will usually be enough.

You will then get enough fuel, so head south and attack the island you can reach. We found the one near the town with two goblins. Defeating them is very simple, so do that, and you will have enough fuel to return to the town.

We defeated one of them with Lunge while moving out of its attack range and pushed the other into the Abyss.

Returning to the Town

You may also receive a message saying that the market is now accessible. Once you are back in town, visit the market and sell any items you no longer need if you want some extra money. You can also buy things like weapons or armor from the market.

Time To Upgrade the Lighthouse

Upgrade the lighthouse Dead Weight

By now, you should have enough money to upgrade the lighthouse. Do that, then reposition the fog using the WASD keys and your mouse. Discover new areas by dispelling the fog. We managed to do this four times, so it cost us 40 Gold.

If you want to know how to spend your skill points, use both of them to unlock Battle of Fervor 1 and Battle of Fervor 2.

With that, the first part of our Dead Weight walkthrough comes to an end. We will continue with Part 2 from here, so be sure to come back next time.
