Dead Weight Walkthrough – Part 2

Dead Weight walkthrough featured

Welcome to the Into Indie Games Part 2 walkthrough of Dead Weight featuring traversal tips and guidance on how to defeat Aluza.

Dead Weight is a turn-based RPG featuring roguelite mechanics. The game does an excellent job of mixing these genres, as they all work very well together. Your aim is to save your partner from the volcanic island, and to do that, you need to dispel the fog. For more information, check out its Steam page.

As this is a roguelite RPG with turn-based tactical combat, it can be difficult to progress without running into problems. We already have Part 1 of the walkthrough published, which can help you get started. So, here we will provide you with Part 2 of the Dead Weight walkthrough featuring some traversal tips and guidance on how to defeat Aluza.

Disclaimer

In Dead Weight. islands, loot, events, and enemy encounters are procedurally generated in each run, so your experience may differ from ours. You may not encounter the same events, enemies, or loot in the same order, and some things may not appear at all. That said, after completing numerous runs and spending several hours with the game, we’ve found that many important locations, encounters, and mechanics remain consistent across playthroughs. While the placement and order of certain things can change, the overall progression is similar enough for this walkthrough to serve as a reliable guide. Use this walkthrough as a reference rather than a step-by-step guide, as the game’s randomized nature means your playthrough will likely differ from ours.

Dead Weight Walkthrough – Continue Exploring

Fighting goblins in Dead Weight

Last time we stopped at the town after dispelling some fog through the lighthouse. So, now that we are out of money, what we need to do is continue exploring. Last time we explored the northern part the most, so let’s head south this time.

Head south and attack the first island you see. For us, a couple of goblins appeared in the fight. If it is a goblin island, then you will most probably have a similar encounter. Let them position themselves and, when they are done, simply move out of their attack range.

However, if it will take only one step for you to move out, then what you need to do is attack first and then move away. Defeat the goblins and move on. Now, we wanted to test what happens when you run out of fuel, and it turned out to be a pretty interesting experience.

What Happens When The Fuel Runs Out?

Dead Weight Walkthrough – Setting the ship to drift isn’t that bad of an idea.

Further to the south, there was not a single island, so we kept going to dispel the fog and still found nothing. So, we used all of our fuel, and then a few options appeared. The game gives you a chance to get more fuel by burning resources.

However, if you choose to go with the wind, the game gives you another option. You can either trust the wind or simply spend a resource to return to the town. Going back to the town without fuel can be troublesome, so we decided to let the wind take us.

Then, after drifting, we reached a goblin island, and there were four of them waiting for us.

Defeating The Goblins

The best way to defeat a group of goblins is by taking out the one that is separated from the others first. The first goblin on the right side got close to us, so we pushed it into the abyss. Then two of the remaining goblins moved closer to the middle, making it much easier to push them into the abyss as well.

So, if you are in a similar position, you need to take advantage of the Push skill. Pushing goblins into the abyss is much easier and far more satisfying than fighting them directly. One of the goblins was also stuck between a barrel and a box. So, pushing it into the abyss by shoving either the barrel or the box is the best choice here.

Using this tactic, we were easily able to defeat the goblins without taking a single hit. The next step is to gather more fuel by attacking more islands. For us, there were two more islands nearby, one to the northwest and one to the south.

Gathering More Fuel

Now, the island to the northeast also had four goblins, and the way you are positioned at the beginning makes it almost impossible to avoid taking a hit. With only two movement points, it was almost impossible to stay out of danger, so if you are in a similar position, you will probably have to take a hit.

However, in some cases, you may be able to attack one of them and then move into a direction where that same goblin is attacking. Then, if another goblin manages to kill the goblin whose attack range you are currently standing in, you will be able to get away without taking a hit.

We did take a hit here, but after winning the fight, the reward included the Blessed Shirt, which increases your health by one.

Also, do note that if you think there is nowhere to go, then using the Explosive skill followed by a melee attack will allow you to kill the goblin in front of you. Then you can move into its position if it is safe.

Defeating More Goblins To Gather More Fuel

Before you proceed further, for the next pair of skills, you need to unlock Strong Body and then Vitality. You may not have enough points for both, and that is alright. So, simply unlock Strong Body first and then unlock Vitality when you earn another skill point.

The goblins to the south were much trickier to handle. There were more goblins with AoE attacks, so positioning was a little more difficult. That said, even if you take hits during the fight, it does not matter too much because you can use bandages to recover your health.

Heading Back To The Town

By now you would have accumulated a lot of fatigue, so the best option is to head back to the town. The best practice is to leave a couple of enemy islands untouched, as they can help you return to the town if you do not have any spare fuel.

That way, you can visit these islands first, defeat the goblins, and then get some fuel as a reward. After that, you can simply head back to the town without much trouble. That said, if you have already destroyed all of the islands around the town, you can continue exploring in the hope of finding a wandering tavern, which can recover both your health and your fatigue.

Recover Your Fatigue And Hire A Mercenary

Dead Weight hiring a mercenary before fighting aluza
Dead Weight Walkthrough – Before you fight Aluza, you should at least hire one mercenary.

Once you reach the town, head to the tavern and recover your fatigue. After you have done that, check out the mercenaries available there and hire one. It will cost you 50 gold, and you should have enough to hire at least two.

That said, hire only one for now. Then, if you want some extra money, you can sell your unwanted items in the market. Once that is done, head to the lighthouse and upgrade the telescope. You should have already upgraded the lighthouse once, so now it is time to improve the telescope.

This way, you will be able to dispel more fog. Now, if you do not have enough fuel, as we did, what you need to do is set the ship adrift. This option will be below the stats on the left side.

Set The Ship Adrift

Press the option and, even if you do not have any fuel, the wind will carry your ship away. Select the option Trust the Wind and then hope for a miracle. We drifted to an island with a one-star difficulty rating, meaning there were only two goblins waiting for us.

Pushing both of them into the abyss is the best way to win. Then, we were able to secure some fuel for the journey. We then reached the western side of the map and found an event. If you see a giant island with a volcanic theme, that is where you need to head next.

Find The Volcanic Island

Dead Weight volcanic island and aluza

Once you have found the Volcanic Island, head there, and you will find Aluza. At first, there are going to be four enemies, but Aluza will summon one more. So, you have to defeat the first four enemies while also making your way toward Aluza.

That is going to be tough because these enemies are durable and cover a large number of tiles with their attacks. What we did was push the Corruptor Sniper off the edge and into the abyss. However, make sure to move both of your characters out of the enemies’ attack range before ending your turn.

Also, Aluza’s attack caused the Corrupted Hunter to fall asleep, so that was one less enemy to worry about. Do note that Aluza will continue summoning more enemies, but she will lose one HP every time she does so. While that works in your favor, you still need to deal with the extra monsters before they become too much to handle.

Now, if you think Aluza is too much for you to handle, we recommend closing the game by pressing ALT + F4. When you load your save again, you will be outside the Volcanic Island right before pressing the Land button. Now, what you need to do is have at least one teammate with you.

This will allow you to split the focus of the enemy forces. Also, you need to have the Blessed Shirt equipped on your main character, and if you have bandages, make sure to use them until your health is full. Then, head back to the island and begin the battle.

Winning this battle by defeating all of Aluza’s pawns and waiting for her to lose all of her health naturally is not the ideal strategy. What you need to do is focus on Aluza while also dealing with the rest of her army. The enemy pattern will change in each run, so do not rely on what happened during the previous attempt.

Avoiding The Attacks Is The Key

You should focus more on avoiding damage than dealing damage. The Explosive Fury skill helps a lot during this fight, so make sure to use it whenever the opportunity presents itself.

We managed to win this fight without taking a single hit, and that is definitely possible. You can do the same by stepping out of the enemies’ attack range every turn. However, you may not always be able to do that if every enemy is focusing on you.

That is why having a partner with you makes this battle much easier. It allows you to divide the attention of the enemies between both characters. Also, even if you do not attack, the enemies will still damage one another because many of their attacks cover a large area.

So, them hitting each other throughout the battle is highly possible. Even Aluza will put them to sleep quite often, making the encounter much easier for you.

Defeating Aluza

Dead Weight getting close to aluza
Dead Weight Walkthrough – Closing the gap to Aluza and defeating her is the key to victory.

As you continue pushing enemies into the abyss and defeating them with your sword, make sure you steadily move toward Aluza. That is the key to finishing this fight quickly. She has a lot of health, so wait until roughly half of it is gone. Then, move close to her, and as you do, the enemies will also be able to damage her with their attacks.

You simply have to stay out of their attack range. What we did was let the other enemies damage her before pushing her into one of the traps, specifically the one that causes Bleed. That removed two points of her health, but after she was left with only one HP, she switched positions with our character.

So, do keep in mind that she can force teleportation. That said, when she did that, she had only one HP remaining, and our character ended up very close to her. Even though we were surrounded by enemies and they were almost guaranteed to hit us on their next turn, we were still able to finish the fight by delivering the final blow to Aluza.

So, your goal should be to follow the same tactics and defeat her in combat. This fight is not nearly as difficult once you understand that your main priority is avoiding damage for most of the battle.

Aftermath Of Defeating Aluza

Dead Weight: aftermath of defeating aluza

After defeating Aluza, a conversation with her begins, after which you push her into the abyss. Then, you have another conversation with your partner, who had been abducted. After that, you are pulled into the abyss yourself, where you will have a conversation with Virilis.

With that, you will unlock Madness. During your travels, the hero will now encounter Madness, which slowly corrupts the world. Then, back in the town, you will have another conversation with Munar-Degher. After that, you will receive a pop-up revealing that access to the Temple has now been unlocked.

Head To The Temple

Now that the Temple has been unlocked, head there to see what it has to offer. Here, you can gain the favor of the Ancients by spending money, reduce Madness to its minimum level, and reset the points allocated in the hero’s skill tree.

So, it is going to be a very useful location throughout your journey. With that, the Voice in Your Head objective, Find the Volcanic Island and Defeat Aluza, comes to an end in Dead Weight.
